SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore College Softball defeated Widener University 4-2 and 6-5 in a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Garnet improved to 10-6 this season.
Senior
Marit Vike and freshman
Gwen Glatz each had three hits on the day.
Game 1: Swarthmore 4, Widener 2
Swarthmore did all of its offensive damage in third inning of this victory. It started with singles by senior
Hannah Thompson and Vike. They both scored by on consecutive ground ball outs by sophomore
Mika Maenaga and Glatz.
Sophomore
Victoria Overbeck delivered the big blow, a two-RBI single that scored freshman
Laura Hirai and junior
Gabriella Natoli.
Glatz was the starting pitcher, and she blanked the Pride over the first six innings. She finished with two strikeouts, no walks, one earned run and five hits allowed. Her pitching record is 3-1 this season.
Game 2: Swarthmore 6, Widener 5
The Garnet took a commanding 5-0 lead over the first four innings and nearly let the win slip away.
Glatz doubled to score Maenaga in the first, and Vike scored on a wild pitch in the third.
Vike came to bat with the bases loaded in the fourth, and she struck the ball hard enough to make the left fielder misplay it. Hirai as well as sophomores
Lucy Decker and
Sam Wagner all scored on the play.
Decker started in the circle and had a perfect game through three innings and a no-hitter through four. However, sophomore
Maddie Bowe came on for one out in the seventh when the game was tied 5-5. So she picked up her team-best fourth win of the season when Natoli hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Vike and win the game.
Swarthmore now enters Centennial Conference play as it takes on Muhlenberg College in a doubleheader in Allentown, Pa., on Tuesday beginning at 3 p.m.
