Wrestling Seizes Titles at Messiah Invite

Bullets claim first team championship in four decades

Team Scores | Individual Results

GRANTHAM, Pa. –
On the strength of four individual titles, the Gettysburg College wrestling team locked down its first team tournament championship in over four decades at the season-opening Messiah College Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Gettysburg grabbed top honors with 110.5 total points, beating out host Messiah, which finished with 97. Wheaton College was third with 83 points. It was the Bullets' first team championship since winning the Middle Atlantic Conference crown in 1976.

Four Bullets captured individual titles, which also marked the first time that has happened since the 1976 MAC meet. Sophomore Robert Garnett (Springfield, Va./Thomas Edison) and junior Colin Devlin (Dresher, Pa./Upper Dublin) procured their first career titles at 141 and 149, respectively. Senior Colin Kowalski (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) earned his third career individual title with a win at 174, while classmate Paul Triandafilou (Derwood, Md./Georgetown Prep) copped his eighth heavyweight crown and became the program's all-time wins leader in the division.

Six more Gettysburg grapplers reached placement matches. Senior Dan Ebert (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) finished runner-up at 184 pounds in his first taste of action in more than year. Sophomore Sean Thompson (Plainsboro, N.J./West Plainsboro South) also finished second at 141 pounds. Freshman Ray Martin (Downingtown, Pa./West Chester Henderson) was Gettysburg's top newcomer with a third-place effort at 157. Senior Noah Malamut (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep), sophomore Phil Angelo (Summit, N.J./Summit), and sophomore Mike Iodice (Flemington, N.J./Hunterdon Central) each finished fourth at 133, 149, and 197, respectively.

Gettysburg was assured of at least one title with Garnett and Thompson reaching the finals at 141. Garnett went through the bottom of the bracket with a major decision (8-0) and two decisions, while Thompson posted two decisions and a pin to reach the event finals for the second year in a row. Garnett denied his teammate a second consecutive title with a 3-2 victory.

Devlin was dominant at 149, racking up three pins on his way to the title match where he faced off with Messiah's Stephen Maloney. The Middle Atlantic Conference champion and a national qualifier last season, Maloney defeated the Gettysburg junior in all three meetings a year ago and had out-scored his three foes 55-6 on Saturday. The final bout belonged to Devlin, who threw his nemesis to the mat 1:17 into the second period for his fourth pin of the day and his first collegiate title.

Kowalski, who entered the weekend ranked 10th in the nation at 165, was just as dominant wrestling up a weight class as he was a year ago when he was a national qualifier. He opened his day with a pair of first-period falls before beating Dan Swarr from Messiah 7-4. Another Falcon waited in the finale and Kowalski made short work of Victor DeFrance, pinning him to the mat in 32 seconds. A two-time winner of the Petrofes Invitational, Kowalski's three career titles have all come at events hosted by Messiah.

Triandafilou was the top seed in the heavyweight bracket. The ninth-ranked grappler in the country, he dispatched his first foe with a 4-1 decision and then grinded out a 2-1 overtime win over Jefferey Allen from Liberty University in the semifinals. Paired with Darien Kaufmann in the championship match, Triandafilou secured the only point to win the title. The victory was the 91st of his career, pushing him past Bobby Christopher '11 for the most wins by a Gettysburg heavyweight. The Gettysburg senior also moved into sixth on the program's all-time wins list.

Ebert fell just short of a title in his return to the mat at 184 pounds. After missing all of the 2017-18 campaign because of injury, the senior showed no rust in winning his first bouts with first-period falls. He scored a 7-0 win over Benjamin Maack from Ursinus College in the semis, but was upended by fall against Wheaton's Isaac Odell in the finals.

Martin won his collegiate debut by major decision (11-3) against Alex Koenig from Ursinus. After getting bounced to the consolation bracket, the first-year wended his way through the consolation bracket with a pair of decisions and a pin (2:37) to reach the third-place match. Martin showed no nerves against an experienced Centennial Conference opponent in Wade Bishop from McDaniel College, pinning the Green Terror grappler in just over two minutes.

Like Ebert, Malamut was returning to the mat for the first time since the 2017 NCAA East Regional Championship. He picked up a pin in his season debut and posted a 6-5 decision to reach the semifinals at 133. The senior fell by injury default to eventual champion Ryker Eckenbarger from McDaniel, but he bounced back with a 6-5 win in the consolation semifinals. Malamut was unable to compete in the third-place match.

Angelo won each of his first two matches at 149 with third-period pins before running into Maloney in the semifinals. He came back for a 6-4 decision over Liberty's Charles Hudson in the consolation semifinals. Angelo's day ended with a second-period fall to Elizabethtown College's Cole Cameron.

Iodice pinned his first opponent in just over a minute and added a 5-1 decision in his second match at 197. After falling by decision to eventual champ Austin Amos from Liberty, the Gettysburg sophomore scored a 6-4 win to reach the third-place bout. Johns Hopkins' Isaac Morales, the defending conference champ at 184 pounds, beat Iodice by decision 5-1 in the consolation finals.

Seven more Bullets added multiple wins. Sophomore Jordan Pinette (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) won three matches at 133, including a program-record breaking 13-second pin against Brooks Robinson from Messiah. The fall was one second faster than the previous record shared by Triandafilou and Christopher.

Freshman Eric Chambers (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) posted three pins at 141 pounds, two of which came in the first period. Sophomore Marc Larson (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) also logged three victories at 165 pounds.

Junior Traken Sutton (Wethersfield, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), freshman Mason Canonico (Kailua, Hawaii/Punahou), and sophomore Sal Puglisi (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes) each scored two wins at 149, 165, and 174, respectively.

Gettysburg makes its home debut by hosting a tournament of its own next Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. inside Bream Gym.
