Junior
Matt Gnias and freshman
Dan Gaines scored 15 points apiece to lead the Muhlenberg men's basketball team to a come-from-behind 62-57 win at Delaware Valley in its first game of 2019.
The Mules (6-6), playing for the first time in 17 days, trailed by seven points early in the first half and by one at halftime but shot 53.8 percent from the field in a tight second half in which neither team led by more than five points.
Freshman
Nicholas Chudy gave Muhlenberg a big lift off the bench with 9 points - one more than he had scored all season entering the game. Sophomore
Michael Morreale also scored 9 points, and freshman
Dallas Hoffman blocked 5 shots.
The Mules trailed 54-53 before Gnias spun in the lane for a layup and one. His free throw put Muhlenberg ahead 56-54 with 2:20 left.Â
One Hoffman's blocks contributed to back-to-back defensive stops at the other end, and with 1:13 on the clock, Gaines drove in for a layup to make it 58-54.
GniasÂ
(pictured above) made both ends of a one-and-one for a 60-57 lead with less than 30 seconds to play. The Aggies (6-7) had one last chance to tie the game with a three, but Gnias stole a pass and sank two more free throws with 1.3 ticks left to ice the win.
Muhlenberg held DelVal well below its scoring average of 74.9 points per game and allowed only two three-pointers in 25 attempts.
Gaines scored 12 of his 15 points in the second half and was a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range on the night.
