Baseball Season Ends in Playoffs

The Muhlenberg baseball team saw its season come to an end with a 4-2 loss to Haverford in the first elimination game of the Centennial Conference playoffs.

The Fords (19-19) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, forcing the Mules to play from behind for the whole game.

Sophomore Cameron Miller cut the gap in half when he hit his first career home run in the top of the fifth. Miller (pictured above) became the 12th different Muhlenberg player to belt a round-tripper this season.

Junior Matthew D'Ambrosia settled down after the first inning and did not allow an earned run the rest of his stint. He worked out of a bases-loaded, nobody-out jam in the bottom of the sixth with a forceout at the plate and back-to-back called third strikes. D'Ambrosia finished with 11 whiffs for his fourth career double-digit strikeout game, moving into fourth place on the program's all-time list with 179 for his career.

Trailing 3-1, the Mules got to within a run again in the top of the eighth following back-to-back walks to senior Matt Riebesell and junior Jack Avallone. Senior Jon Capra put down a sacrifice bunt that the Haverford pitcher threw away, allowing Riebesell to score.

The Fords regained their two-run margin on a homer in the bottom of the eighth. Junior John Serruto singled up the middle in the ninth - his 100th career hit - to bring the tying run to the plate, but the last two batters were set down.

Riebesell finished 2-for-3 with a double in his final game, extending his school records for two-baggers in a season (21) and career (43). He hit .531 with seven doubles over his last seven games to end the season with a .411 batting average.
