Women's Tennis Opens New Season With Home Invite

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Women's Tennis hosted the 2019 Swat Invite on Saturday and Sunday, and recorded the most individual wins of any of the four teams competing.

Swarthmore registered 15 wins in singles matches, Haverford College had 12, Washington College 10, and La Salle University five. Swarthmore had 10 doubles wins while Haverford and Washington both had six and La Salle just two.

The Garnet, who ended last season ranked No. 25 in the nation, look to have a strong year again in 2019-20.

In doubles fare, on Saturday, Kassan and Wang won 8-4. Sophomores Sonia Varma and Sophie Brown picked up an 8-4 win. On Sunday, Wang and Kassan earned an 8-2 win against Haverford. Varma and freshman Jenny Lewis took a match from La Salle 8-2. Rachel Hechinger and Sophie Brown paired up for an 8-6 win over La Salle. Grace Dignazio and Anna Miller earned the 8-2 win against the Explorers as well.

Varma and Miller worked together to a win over Haverford in the third round. Wang and Brown, Lewis and Hechinger, and Dignazio and Kassan each won another match in the third round.

Dignazio won all three of her singles matches. Varma added a pair of singles wins in three tries.

Swarthmore competes at the ITA Fall Regionals in Fredericksburg, Virginia beginning on Saturday.
