Third-Quarter Surge Lifts Gettysburg Past Dickinson

Bullets light the lamp six times in third period on way to 11-8 victory

GETTYSBURG, Pa. Senior Andrew Garstka (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic) pumped in four goals, classmate Jack Harvey (New Providence, N.J./New Providence) turned in a hat trick, and eighth-ranked Gettysburg College scored six times in the third quarter on the way to an 11-8 victory over No. 14 Dickinson College Wednesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

In a rematch of the 2018 Centennial Conference Championship finale won by Dickinson (8-4, 2-2 CC), Gettysburg (10-3, 4-1 CC) broke the game open with a 7-1 run spanning the second and third quarters.

Garstka tied his personal best with four goals and added an assist. Harvey tied his season high with five points on three goals and two assists, while junior Michael McCormick (Lorton, Va./Paul VI Catholic) posted a pair of tallies and three assists. Sophomore Jack Fletcher (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) added a goal and an assist.

Gettysburg's defense held Dickinson six goals below its season scoring average. Freshman goalie Scott MacMillan (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) posted nine saves, while junior Christian Atalese (Lon Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) tallied three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Junior Mitch Wykoff (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers and sophomore Andrew Horn (Bronxville, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) corralled three ground balls.

John Lockwood led the Red Devils with two goals and three assists. Nick Goles produced two goals and an assist, while Jack O'Connell tossed in a pair of scores. Goalie Cole Pellicano came up with eight saves.

The attack for both teams took a bit to get going with only Dickinson managing to find the back of the cage in the first 15 minutes of action. Garstka answered for the hosts early in the second period, catching a pass from Harvey and rifling it into the cage. A goal by Joel Mayo put the Red Devils back in front 2-1 with 8:14 left in the first half.

The Bullets made the most of a man-up opportunity less than three minutes later, with McCormick dishing to freshman Elon Tuckman (Princeton, N.J./Princeton Day School) for the equalizer. Following a save by MacMillan, Garstka gave his team the advantage going into the break with an unassisted tally at 2:36.

Gettysburg kicked its attack in high gear to open the third period as Garstka, McCormick, and Harvey all lit the lamp in less than three minutes. O'Connell stopped the run with a man-up goal, but McCormick dodged his way to an open shot for a 7-3 lead with 9:15 to play.

The Red Devils fired away with a pair of shots on goal after winning the ensuing face-off. MacMillan stonewalled attempts by Goles and Lockwood to preserve the four-goal margin. A penalty gave Dickinson a man-up opportunity, but the Gettysburg defense came up with a big stop as Wykoff knocked down a pass and picked up the ground ball.

Fletcher forced his way around the cage and found a seam past Pellicano for his only goal and an 8-3 lead with 6:35 left in the third quarter. Goles and Lockwood cut into the margin with back-to-back tallies before Harvey converted off a pass from Garstka with just four seconds in the frame to push the lead to 9-5.

The Red Devils would get no closer than three goals in the fourth quarter. Trailing 10-7, Dickinson forced a turnover and headed back up the field, but senior Jackson Mumford (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur) knocked the ball loose from Bobby Barroll and Gettysburg came up with the possession. Pellicano stopped a pair of shots on goal, but Harvey cashed in on the third try to push the lead to 11-7.

After Lockwood scored the game's final tally, the Bullets dominated possession over the final 5:36, holding the ball for all but 66 seconds to end the game. MacMillan recorded his final save on a shot by Ryan Schaffer with 3:12 to play.

Gettysburg led in shots 37-35, while Dickinson led in ground balls (32-27) and face-off wins (11-10). The Bullets were perfect on all 22 of their clear attempts.

Gettysburg travels to Haverford College this Saturday at noon.
