Women's Soccer Logs Clean Sheet in Season Opening Win over Arcadia, 1-0

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Haverford College women's soccer team (1-0) opened up the 2022 season with a flourish, taking a 1-0 victory over visiting Arcadia (0-2) in the opening game of the Haverford Kick Off Classic at Walton Field. The Fords added the game-winning goal in just the second minute of action, holding strong for the final 88 minutes of play to open the season victorious for the second straight campaign.

The aforementioned game-winner came on the first shot of the contest for either team, electrifying a large crowd gathered at Walton almost immediately. With Haverford establishing a threat in the attacking third, Alyssa Saito threaded a perfectly-placed through ball to the waiting foot of a streaking Liv McMillan, who buried the attempt deftly past the Arcadia goalkeeper to open the scoring. The third career tally for McMillan held as the only goal of the contest thanks in part to a strong defensive pressure from the shutout-minded Fords. Haverford has now recorded 126 shutouts in the tenure of Head Coach Jamie Schneck. Saturday was the second full clean sheet for Cywes, who takes over goalkeeping duties in her senior season.

Haverford had a shot to extend the advantage in the 18th minute as Sarah Klink rocketed a shot on frame, and Celia Page notched two solid shots on frame in the second period. Claire Cywes was called into action to make just one save, but the backline was tested as the Knights fired off 11 shots to just five for the hosts on the afternoon.

Angela Rosenberger was a key offensive option for the visitors, firing off a game-high three shots while the two from Page paced the Fords. Haverford has now won two consecutive contests against Arcadia, its traditional season opener opponent, pulling to 18-8-4 in a series that dates back to 1985 when Arcadia was known as Beaver College.

The Fords now return tomorrow for the second day of action at the Kick Off Classic, taking on Stevens at noon. The second game will feature Arcadia taking on Washington & Lee at approximately 3 p.m.
