Women's Soccer Edged by Swarthmore

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Swarthmore took advantage of one of the few chances the Ursinus College women's soccer team gave it during Wednesday night's Centennial Conference tilt, scoring the lone goal early in the second half and hanging on for a 1-0 decision.

Sophia Stills received the ball after a deflection and tucked a right-footed shot from just inside the box into the bottom left corner of the net and past a diving Sabrina Doherty for the only goal of the night as the Garnet (6-2, 1-1) grabbed their first league result.

Despite dropping its third straight 1-0 final, Ursinus (3-3-1, 0-2) was on the front foot early. Angela Gervasi got free in the box just three minutes in, but couldn't get enough on a header off a beautiful feed from Raya Mount, and Sarah Wixted put another shot on frame just three minutes later.

Neither side had much of an opening in a scoreless first half, but Stills made sure to capitalize on a rare opportunity just five minutes into the second frame.

The Bears defended doggedly and had a few chances of their own as the second half wore on. Taylor Beaumont played a perfect cross into the path of an on-rushing Makayla Heisler, who blasted a volley just high. Just shy of the 70-minute mark, Ursinus put the ball in the net but was thwarted by an offside call.

Swarthmore owned a 14-5 advantage in shots and piled up 12 corner kicks to just one for the Bears. Chantal Reyes, who came in having allowed just one goal on the season, made both saves she needed to for her third clean sheet.

Doherty finished with five saves for Ursinus, four of them coming after intermission.

The Bears forge ahead with CC play at Gettysburg on Saturday.
