CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Gettysburg College men's swimming team posted the top times in 10 events on the way to overpowering host Washington College 154-105 in its season and Centennial Conference opener Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (1-0, 1-0 CC) won the nine of the first 13 events before opting to swim the 200 free relay as an exhibition. The Bullets took the top two spots in six events.
Sophomores
Duncan Proxmire (McLean, Va./Langley) and
Jack Edelson (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Senior) and freshman
Oliver Pickering (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) each picked up a pair of wins. Proxmire doubled up in the distance events, first claiming the 1,000 free by 16 seconds (9:54.64) and then adding a victory in the 500 free (4:49.91).
Edelson touched the wall first in the 200 free (1:46.52) and the 100 fly (54.52). Making his collegiate debut, Pickering shined with first-place efforts in the 200 fly (1:59.59) and the 200 IM (2:01.83).
Sophomore
Oliver Yancey (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) captured a victory in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.70, while freshman
Sam Nonemaker (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) led a 1-2-3 finish by the Bullets in the 100 free with a time of 48.81. Nonemaker was also the top Gettysburg swimmer in the 50 free, finishing 0.09 behind Washington's Jake Brown with a time of 21.99.
Sophomore
Danny Petrillo (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) was the runner-up in a pair of events, first finishing behind Edelson in the 200 free (1:47.73) and then coming in right behind Nonemaker in the 100 free (49.25). Freshman
CJ Hewitt (Bridgewater, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan) touched the wall behind teammates in three events: 1,000 free (10:10.81), 500 free (4:53.88), and 200 IM (2:02.91).
Runner-up finishes were also turned in by sophomore
Aedan Collins (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) in the 100 fly (54.68) and junior
Adam Dias (Wilmington, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.23).
Gettysburg posted the top marks in both relays. The 200 medley relay with Collins, Yancey, Hewitt, and Nonemaker clocked in at 1:38.80 in the opening race. With the meet well in hand, the 200 free relay swam an exhibition race with Nonemaker, Yancey, junior
Ogden Leyens (Fort Washington, Pa./Upper Dublin), and Collins touching the wall first in 1:28.86.
The Bullets make their home debut with a non-conference tri-meet with Susquehanna University and Messiah College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
