BALTIMORE, Md (February 2, 2019)  – No. 1
Troy Stanich earned two pins to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology wrestling team over Johns Hopkins and Washington & Lee to clinch the Ducks' fourth straight Centennial Conference dual championship Saturday in a quad dual hosted by the Blue Jays.
No. 6
Brett Kaliner also won twice on the day as Stevens improved its dual record to 13-7. The two victories moved Stevens to a perfect 7-0 in Centennial action. The Ducks have not dropped a conference dual during the regular season since falling 22-19 to then-No. 24 NYU on Feb. 4, 2015, a string of 29 consecutive victories.
"We are proud of the way the team competed today," head coach
Joe Favia said. "This dual meet season has not been an easy road, but the guys came together and learned how to win as a team. It was a crucial learning experience for our program and its development."
"It's good to finish the season with a win and take home the conference dual meet title," Favia continued. "But that's only half of our goal within the conference. We have a big week ahead in preparation for the conference championships. We plan to finish our time in the Centennial on the right foot."
The day began with a 23-20 victory over the Blue Jays, extending Stevens' winning streak in the all-time series to five. Freshman
Akhil Vega opened the dual with a 19-3 technical fall over Jeremy Rogers, before senior
Joey Borai was unable to rally in the final minute and dropped a 7-5 decision to No. 9 Ricky Cavallo. The Ducks extended their lead to 14 after Stanich and Kaliner posted consecutive pins of Connor Mauriello and Jack Albin. Stanich earned the fall in just 100 seconds, while Kaliner earned his in the opening minute of the second period. The duo are tied with a team-leading 15 pins.
Hopkins closed the score with a pin at 157 and a 9-4 decision at 165, before freshman
Robert Gennat earned his 11th win of the year with a competitive 3-2 decision over Nathan Wertheimer. Classmate
Michael Dooley followed with a 2-0 shutout of Bradlee Lamontagne at 184 to give the Ducks a 23-12 advantage. A technical fall at 197 pulled Hopkins within six, but sophomore
Joseph Moreno returned to the mat and battled Henri Behaeghel to a close 3-1 decision to close out the scoring.Â
In the second dual of the afternoon, the Ducks used four consecutive victories to open a 21-3 victory en route to a 28-13 victory over the Generals. After a decision victory for Washington & Lee opened the dual, senior
Joey Borai earned an 11-0 major over Russ Zimmerman to put Stevens in front. Stanich earned his second first-period fall of the day and Kaliner followed with 26-10 technical fall over Bryce Crew to give Stevens a 15-3 lead.
Junior
Dylan Van Sickell earned a disqualification victory at 157 to give the Ducks a 21-3 advantage. The Generals picked up three straight victories to close the gap to 21-13, although only one of the wins (165) came with bonus points. With just eight points between the teams, sophomore
Bruce Parola earned one of his biggest victories of the season with a 10-1 major over Brad Basham to clinch both the dual and the conference dual title. Sophomore
Joseph Moreno earned a 4-2 decision over Clay Chadwick for his second victory of the season to close out the event. With the victory, Stevens moved to 12-2 all-time against the Generals.
Additionally, freshmen
Joseph Schneider and
Jarrett Weir each collected a pin in their respective exhibition matches.
