Men’s Soccer Falls Short against Swarthmore on Senior Day

GETTYSBURG, Pa. –  Sophomore Sam Lerman (Wayzata, Minn./Field School) netted his first goal of the season, but the Gettysburg College men's soccer team came up on the short end of a 2-1 decision against Swarthmore College in a Centennial Conference match Saturday evening on Senior Day at Clark Field.

Seniors Evan Jansen (Humarock, Mass./Boston College), Peter Kost (Millburn, N.J./Millburn), and Matt Stine (Short Hills, N.J./Millburn) were honored in a brief ceremony before the start of the match.

It was the third consecutive loss, second-straight one-goal defeat, for the Bullets (7-6-1, 4-4 CC), who received five saves from junior goalkeeper Thomas Keane (Potomac, Md./Gonzaga College).

In the opening half, it was an even playing field as each team played aggressively with most of the play occurring in the midfield area. It was a scoreless draw heading into intermission with both teams taking two shots on goal each.

The Bullets struck the first tally to go up 1-0 in the second half at the 58th minute when Lerman blasted a perfect shot into the left side of the net off a feed from freshman Oladayo Thomas (Larchmont, N.Y./The Masters).

Swarthmore pulled even six minutes later as Joe Barile shot to the lower left of the frame off a pass from Harry Nevins. 39 seconds later, the Garnet's marched their way back down as Zach Viscusi tallied the second goal to take the 2-1 lead.  Nevins was, once again, credited with the assist.

From the 75th minute until the end of the match, the Bullets took five shots but was unable to connect. The last shot came from sophomore Paul Sampson (Lagos, Nigeria/Holderness School [N.H.]) who headed the ball wide left with under three minutes remaining.

Gettysburg concluded the match outshooting Swarthmore 11-7, while both teams finished with two corner kicks each.

The Bullets will play their final regular-season match at home against non-conference opponent Catholic University on Tuesday, Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m.
