READING, Pa. - Swarthmore College Softball struggled offensively at Penn State Berks on Tuesday afternoon, losing 3-2 and 4-1 in consecutive games.
The Garnet fall to 8-5 on the season.
GAME ONE: Penn State Berks 3, Swarthmore 2
The Garnet dug themselves a hole to begin the day as the Nittany Lions plated three in the bottom of the first on a double and a home run.
Freshman
Gwen Glatz came on as a relief pitcher and shut PSU down for 5.1 innings, allowing just three hits.
Swarthmore put together a rally in the top of the seventh, but it fell just shy of extending the game. One run scored on a sacrifice fly by junior
Gabriella Natoli, and another came in via single by sophomore
Victoria Overbeck. At that point, Swarthmore had runners on first and second with one out, but the next two batters were retired in order.
GAME TWO: Penn State Berks 4, Swarthmore 1
It was a bit of the same story for Swarthmore in the second game, but this time PSU didn't take its 2-0 advantage until the bottom of the fifth inning.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Maddie Bowe was relieved after the fifth inning of her solid outing. She's 3-2 this season with a 2.41 ERA.
Freshman
Eva Karolczak scored Swarthmore's lone run on an error by PSU's first baseman. Garnet sophomore
Mika Maenaga had two of her team's three hits.
Swarthmore's next games are at Immaculata in Malvern, Pa., on Saturday. The Garnet and Mighty Macs play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
