Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 1 Garnet Open Season With Win At Eastern

ST. DAVIDS, Pa.—No. 1 Swarthmore College Men's Basketball began the 2019-20 campaign with a 100-point performance on the road as the Garnet topped the Eastern University Eagles 100-74.

Swarthmore, coming off an appearance in the NCAA Championship game last season, started seniors Nate Shafer and Zac O'Dell, junior Ryan Ingram and sophomores Colin Shaw and George Visconti. The starters combined for 55 points, but the top-scoring effort came from sophomore forward Justin Tucker off the bench. Tucker shot 7-of-13 from the floor while hitting three 3-pointers en route to an 18-point night.

Visconti finished with 15 points, earning eight of those from the charity stripe. Freshman Vinny DeAngelo played 20 minutes in reserve at point guard and registered 12 points and two assists to go along with four rebounds.

Ingram handled the rock in the start and scored 11 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Preseason All-American big men Zac O'Dell and Nate Shafer each posted double-figures. Shafer scored 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and two blocks. O'Dell had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. He also blocked a game-high four shots. In all, Swarthmore rejected seven attempts by Eastern.

Four Eastern Eagles reached double digits in scoring, with William Blet leading the opposition with 16 points.

Swarthmore bounced out to a 10-point lead in the first seven minutes, but Eastern hung around in the first half. The Garnet shot 46.9 percent from the field in the first half, but went just 1-of-10 from 3-point range. Swarthmore's first triple came in the final minute of the first half. The Garnet got into a rhythm in the second half and shot 8-of-16 from long range.

A steady stream of fouls seemed to interrupt the flow of the game. Eastern made 20-of-37 (54.1 percent) from the free-throw line, and Swarthmore shot 23-of-36 from the stripe.

The Garnet continue on the road on Nov. 16 at Neumann University for a 5 p.m. game.
