CORTLAND, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2020) – The USMMA wrestling team opened up the 2021-22 season on Saturday at the New York State Championships hosted by SUNY Cortland. The Mariners came in fifth place out of the 19 teams that competed at the event.

A total of 10 wrestlers placed in the top-six at the event, including one who came in second place – freshman
Connor Brown (Hanover, Pa.) at 149, and two in third place – freshman
Draygan Colonese (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 174-pound bracket and senior
Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 184.

Brown won his first four bouts of the day, the first two by decisions and then a quarterfinal victory via a major decision. He moved on to the first-place match thanks to a medical forfeit, before falling to the #2-seed in the bracket.

Colonese lost his first bout of the day to the top-seed in the bracket, but then won the following six matchups, including one via a pin and three by way of technical falls.

Sims won his first two matches, including the first two by falls over the fourth- and fifth-seeded wrestlers in the 184-pound bracket. After losing a decision to the top-seed, Sims won the next two in the wrestlebacks to claim third.

The other Mariners to place at the event are listed below.Â
- Sophomore Jimmy Dunagan (Boulder City, Nev.) placed fourth in the heavyweight bracket with a 5-1 record with four-straight pins in the wrestlebacks
- Freshman Logan Green (Perkasie, Pa.) placed fourth in the 184-pound bracket with a 4-2 record with three pins.
- Freshman Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed fifth in the 149-pound bracket with a 4-2 record with two technical falls.
- Senior Dominick Esposito (Marlboro, N.J.) placed fifth in the 174-pound bracket with a 4-2 record with three pins and a major decision.
- Senior Max Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) placed fifth in the 197-pound bracket with a 3-2 record with one major decision.
- Freshman Cameron Pleninger (Havre, Mont.) placed sixth in the 141-pound bracket with a 3-3 record with one major decision.
- Freshman Michael Emerick (Damascus, Md.) placed sixth in the 165-pound bracket with a 2-3 record.

The Mariners are back in action the first weekend of December, when they travel to York, Pa., to take part in the annual York New Standard Corp. Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Dec. 3-4. Any live links for the event will be posted on
