CORTLAND, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2020) – The USMMA wrestling team opened up the 2021-22 season on Saturday at the New York State Championships hosted by SUNY Cortland. The Mariners came in fifth place out of the 19 teams that competed at the event.

A total of 10 wrestlers placed in the top-six at the event, including one who came in second place – freshman Connor Brown (Hanover, Pa.) at 149, and two in third place – freshman Draygan Colonese (Colorado Springs, Colo.) in the 174-pound bracket and senior Billy Sims (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) at 184.

Brown won his first four bouts of the day, the first two by decisions and then a quarterfinal victory via a major decision. He moved on to the first-place match thanks to a medical forfeit, before falling to the #2-seed in the bracket.

Colonese lost his first bout of the day to the top-seed in the bracket, but then won the following six matchups, including one via a pin and three by way of technical falls.

Sims won his first two matches, including the first two by falls over the fourth- and fifth-seeded wrestlers in the 184-pound bracket. After losing a decision to the top-seed, Sims won the next two in the wrestlebacks to claim third.
