Freshman
Evan Spano, making his first career start, combined with two relievers on a two-hitter as the Muhlenberg baseball team improved to 8-4 with a 9-0 win at Marywood.
Spano allowed only two baserunners in his seven-inning stint and faced just one batter over the minimum. After the third Marywood batter of the game singled, he retired the next 17 hitters in order, striking out seven of them. The streak ended when Spano hit a batter with one out in the seventh, but he induced the next batter to ground into a 4-6-3 double play.
In 10 1/3 innings pitched this season, Spano has allowed two hits and no runs.
Freshman
Brian Martorano and junior
Max Krinsky worked a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, to sew up the Mules' third shutout win of the season. The last time Muhlenberg allowed only two hits in a nine-inning game was in 2014 against York (in 10 innings), and the last time the staff pitched a two-hit shutout over nine innings was in 2008 against Ursinus.
Junior
John Serruto ignited the offense from the leadoff spot in the batting order by going 3-for-4. He doubled to lead off the game and eventually scored on a wild pitch, giving the Mules the only run they would need.
A bunt single by SerrutoÂ
(pictured above) sparked a three-run third, with senior Matt Riebsell driving in two of the runs with a single.Â
Senior
Chris Grillo tripled - his 10th career three-bagger - and scored in the fifth, and senior
Jon Capra capped the nine-run outburst with a two-run double in the ninth.
Capra, junior
Jack Avallone and sophomore
Robert Cappadona all had two hits for Muhlenberg.
