Freshman
Evan Spano tossed six scoreless innings and was supported by a strong defense and home runs from senior
Jon Capra and junior
John Serruto in Muhlenberg baseball's 3-2, game-two win over Washington.
Â
Spano allowed just four hits in the outing, while striking out a half dozen batters. He allowed just two base runners past second base on the day. Freshman
Will Nomura tossed the final three innings for his second save of the season.
Â
Behind him, the defense turned three double plays. Spano made a heads up play in the first inning to complete the first twin killing, tagging a runner advancing to second following a pop out to junior
Jack Avallone; the runner tagged after two Muhlenberg fielders collided. In the third, Capra started the second by collecting a chopper in the hole in a 5-4-3 double play. Serruto collected a chopper near second base and tagged the runner before tossing to first in the eighth to preserve the one-run lead.
Â
Capra skied a two-run blast over the fence in dead center in the bottom of the second to give the Mules (17-15, 7-7 CC) the early advantage. Three innings later, Serruto belted the first round-tripper of his career over the fence down the left field line.
Â
The opener started in opposite fashion, with the Shoremen (24-11, 6-8 CC) scoring the first three runs. Capra sent a double to the fence in right center in the bottom of the fourth, plating classmate
Matt Riebesell, to get Muhlenberg on the board. He scored in the next at-bat when junior
Brenden Weiss sent a line drive single up the middle.
Â
Washington led 7-3 heading into the eighth inning, but the Mules wouldn't go down without a fight. Weiss doubled on a hard hit ball to straight-away center with two outs to score Avallone. Capra then scored from third on a groundout by sophomore
Robert Cappadona. The Shoremen, however, took game one 8-5.Â
Â
Senior
Chris Grillo led Muhlenberg with four hits on the day giving him 175 for his career, the fifth most in program history.
Â
Capra's game-one double extended his hitting streak to six games. He owns the Mules' longest streaking base safely this season, having reached in 20 straight contests.
Â
Weiss's 3-for-4 outing in the opener is his second multi-hit game of the year.
