Verrelle and Leonzi Net Hat Tricks as Bears Defeat Arcadia, 13-9.

GLENSIDE, PA. - Senior Jill Verrelle and first-year Maeve Leonzi both earned hat tricks as the Ursinus College women's lacrosse team defeated Arcadia Saturday afternoon, 13-9.  

With the win, the Bears improved to 2-1 overall after winning their second consecutive game. Meanwhile, the Knights of the MAC Freedom Conference fall to 1-4 overall on the season.  

Leading by one at the start of the fourth quarter the Bears outscored the Knights 4-1 in the closing period to earn the road victory.  

The Bears jumped on the board early as Leonzi found the back of the net at the 14:04 mark. Ursinus added two more goals in just under a minute as Julia McCann and Verrelle scored their first goals of the contest. Arcadia answered with a 2-0 run to close out the first quarter trailing 3-2.  

In the second quarter, Grace Lynch snuck a shot past the goalkeeper to give the Bears a 4-2 lead at the 13:57 mark. The Knights responded with three consecutive goals, taking a 5-4 at the 3:42 mark of the second quarter. The Bears answered with back-to-back goals to close out the half and lead 6-5. Andrea Hook tied it at five a piece on a man-up opportunity and McCann connected for her second of the game with 2:01 remaining.  

In the third quarter, Arcadia's Sarah Morris tied the game at six a piece with a goal just 44 seconds into the half. The Bears answered with a 2-0 run after Leonzi and Verrelle found the back of the net and held an 8-6 advantage at the 8:05 mark. Arcadia tied the score at eight a piece after Morris and Maddie Ruger scored on back-to-back possessions. Junior Julie Cherneskie followed up with her first goal of the season with 54 seconds remaining in the quarter to give the Bears a 9-8 advantage through three quarters.  

The Bears controlled the fourth quarter, as Mary Michaud got the offense going at the 13:42 mark with her second goal of the season. After an Arcadia goal, Michaud found Leonzi in front of the net and she connected for third goal of the contest. Two minutes later, Verrelle found the back of the net and gave Ursinus an 12-9 advantage with 8:23 to play. Michaud closed out the contest scoring her second goal of the game at the 4:18 mark of the fourth quarter.  

Junior Alexa Machado earned the win in goal after making 12 saves and allowing single-digit goals in the full 60 minutes. Emily Griffith suffered the loss for the Knights after 15 saves in the full amount of time. The Bears held a 38-30 advantage in shots and a slight 33-28 edge in groundballs. The defense for Ursinus forced 20 turnovers and totaled 17 clears on just 20 attempts.  

Ursinus will return to action on Tuesday as they travel to Puerto Rico for a 10AM start against Roanoke.
