The Muhlenberg men's soccer team closed out the 2018 season in a memorable way, defeating Washington College, 2-1, on a golden goal by freshman
Josh Bordwick in double overtime.
Midway through the second overtime, freshman back
Mark Walter collected a Washington clearance behind the center line and sent the ball into the corner. Junior
Matthew Athanas-Linden was on the receiving end and crossed the ball into the box. The Washington goalie went after the cross but could not control it, and Bordwick
(pictured above) knocked the ball into the empty net with his left foot.
Bordwick's second goal of the season was the first-ever season-ending golden goal for the Mules.
The Shoremen (6-8-3, 2-5-2) scored the first goal of the game midway through the first half but were blanked by the Muhlenberg defense the rest of the way. Freshman
Stephen Carton tied the game by scoring his first career goal early in the second half.
Muhlenberg had several good chances to take the lead before the final goal. Junior
Erich Buerkert forced two tough saves by the Washington goalie, and Carton hit the crossbar with seconds remaining in the first overtime period.
Senior
Jordan Schreer made four saves to earn the win in the last game of his career.
