Senior Scores First-Period Pin in Finals to Earn First-Place Finish

SPRINGFIELD, MA – Senior Ricky Cavallo placed first at 133 pounds to lead the Johns Hopkins wrestling team to a 10th-place finish at the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College on Saturday.  The Blue Jays had three wrestlers place in the top six in their weight class and totaled 53.5 points to earn their 10th-place finish in the 17-team tournament.
 
Host Springfield crowned two individual champions and accumulated 111.5 points to win the team title.  Centenary (102.5 points), Southern Maine (97.5), Coast Guard (94.5) and East Stroudsburg (88.5) rounded out the top five in the team scoring.
 
Cavallo went 4-0 on the day to earn his individual title.  He opened with a 7-1 win over Springfield's Jarred Tolotti and then needed just less than one period to score an 18-0 technical fall victory over Logan Fox of Springfield.  In the semifinals, Cavallo went to overtime to top Jacob Jacobi of Division II East Stroudsburg, 13-9, to move into the finals.
 
In the finals, Cavallo took less than a minute – 59 seconds to be exact – to pin Dylan Jones of Wesleyan to cap his perfect day.
 
Other Top Performances
•  Senior 197 Isaac Morales advanced to the semifinals before withdrawing and placed fourth.  He opened with a first-period pin of Krisian Dawes of Cortland and moved to the semifinals with an 18-2 technical fall victory over Jake Eich of Cortland.  He then topped Sammi Al-Ziab of Springfield, 6-1, in the quarterfinals before withdrawing.
 
•  Sophomore 157 Dominick Reyes went 4-2 at 157 in his first action of the season to place sixth.  Three of his  four wins were of the bonus-point variety as he had two wins by technical fall and one by major.
 
Although they didn't place, six other Blue Jays won at least two matches on the day.  Sophomore Henri Behaeghel led the way as he went 3-2 at 285, while Connor Mauriello (141), Jack Albin (149), Bradlee Lamontagne (157), Miles Gilliam (197) and Karl Tayeb (197) all went 2-2.
 
What's Next
The Blue Jays will return to action on Friday, November 30 at the New Standard Corp Invitational at York (PA).
