Glatz Provides Heroics In Garnet Sweep Of Brandywine

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - In its first home action of 2019, Swarthmore College Softball swept Penn State Brandywine on Saturday, improving to 8-3 on the season.

GAME ONE: Swarthmore 9, Penn State Brandywine 7

The Garnet trailed for the entire game and were down 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Enter freshman Gwen Glatz with the bases loaded. Glatz hit her team's first home run of the season, pulling the ball over the fence in left field to win the game.

Glatz also earned the win as a relief pitcher, allowing just one run over 4.1 innings.

Sophomore Lucy Decker and senior Marit Vike had Swarthmore's other two RBIs in the final inning. Vike went 3-for-4. She's second on the team with a .432 batting average this season. Junior Kalli Segel's .474 batting average is the best on the team.

GAME TWO: Swarthmore 9, Penn State Brandywine 5

Swarthmore held off the Nittany Lions comfortably in Game 2 as it jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with RBI hits from Glatz, sophomore Mike Maenaga and junior Gabriella Natoli.

Glatz couldn't be stopped after hitting the homer. She went 2-fo-2 with two walks and a sac fly with two stolen bases, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Maenaga and senior Elizabeth Curcio also had two hits in the victory.

Swarthmore's four-run rally sealed the deal and included an RBI double from freshman Eva Karolczak.

Sophomore Maddie Bowe pitched a complete game and improved to 3-0 this year.

The Garnet hit the road for a doubleheader on Tuesday against Penn State Berks in Reading, Pa., beginning at 3 p.m.
