No. 14 Women's Soccer Sinks Coast Guard 3-1

MADISON, N.J.--No. 14 Swarthmore College started off with an early lead on Sunday against the US Coast Guard Academy Bears and ran away to a 3-1 win.

Brittany Weiderhold recorded a brace and assisted Swarthmore's first goal for a five-point game. Kim Kockenmeister netted Swarthmore's first goal and assisted its last. Sydney Covitz dealt out Swarthmore's second assist.

Kockenmeister scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the sixth minute. Weiderhold crossed the ball from right to left and Kockenmeister chipped it in for her first goal since tying a Centennial Conference record with four goals against Eastern Connecticut.

Swarthmore tallied eight shots in the first and finished with 20 total. The Garnet limited Coast Guard to 12 shots and seven on goal.

Chantal Reyes recorded four saves in the first half, and freshman Lillian Keller recorded two saves in the second half.

The Garnet would score again about 60 minutes after the first goal. Weiderhold finished off a cross from  Covitz in the 65th minute to up Swarthmore's lead to 2-0. The Coast Guard countered in the 66th minute with its first goal.

Five minutes later, Swarthmore added some insurance with Kockenmeister setting up Weiderhold on a breakaway for her second goal of the day.

Swarthmore hosts Stevens Institute of Technology on Friday at 7 p.m.
