The Short Story: Sophomore
Maddie Brown-Scherer notched a hat trick to lead the ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to an 8-1 win over host Washington College Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• The Blue Jays jumped out to a two-goal lead in the opening quarter with goals from sophomore
Bryn Rolon and Brown-Scherer.
• Hopkins erupted for three goals in just a four-minute span early in the second quarter to push out to a 5-0 lead. Brown-Scherer got the spurt going with a transition goal at the 3:15-mark. Senior
Katie McErlean then scored off a blast from the top right of the circle. Sophomore
Izzy Thompson made it a five-goal game when she scored off a long pass from junior
Danika Berman. The Blue Jays nearly made it four goals in less than five minutes, but a defensive save by Madison Hackett prevented that.
• The Blue Jays opened the third-quarter with three goals in just over five minutes to extend their lead to 8-0. Junior
Valerie Henderson backhanded a loose ball from six yards out 7:05 into the quarter. Freshman
Sam Chabot then deflected an
Abby Birk shot for her first career goal. Brown-Scherer scored what turned out to be the final Hopkins' goal just 31 seconds later and a shot from the top of the circle.
• Anna Harrington prevented the shutout with a shot to the left post off a penalty corner with 13:21 to go in the game.
Â
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 27-10 all-time against Washington College and has won eight straight in the series.
• The eight goals are the most the Blue Jays have ever scored against the Shorewomen. In addition, the eight goals are equal to the total scored by Hopkins in the previous three meetings combined. It is also the most goals scored by Hopkins since a 12-0 win over Notre Dame (MD) on October 2, 2016. Â
Â
