Blue Jays Jump Out To Early Lead In Conference-Opening Victory Over Bryn Mawr

Johns Hopkins Shot 48 Percent In The Victory

Baltimore, MD - Even without the team's leading scorer, Diarra Oden, Johns Hopkins (3-2, 1-0) opened conference play in dominating fashion, defeating Bryn Mawr (0-3, 0-1) College 76-36 on Saturday afternoon. Nine different Blue Jays scored in the victory, with three scoring at least 10 points.

The Blue Jays shot 46 percent from the floor in the first half, jumping out to a 40-15 halftime lead. JHU outscored Bryn Mawr by 13 points in the first quarter and 12 in the second. Lyndsey Hoyd led Johns Hopkins with 10 of her 12 points in the first half, shooting 4-7 from the field.

It was a contest in which the Blue Jays never trailed, as they ripped off an 8-0 run in the first two minutes and five seconds of the game and never relinquished the lead. It took just over six minutes for the Blue Jays to grab their first double-digit lead, as Emily Howie scored off a Kenz Wilkinson feed to make it 15-4. They retook an 11-point lead late in the first after an Elise Moore layup and never let the lead shrink back below 10.

The Owls got a bucket from Meagan Murray-Brace in the early portion of the second quarter, making it 23-10 , before Hopkins ripped off a 9-0 run, extending the lead to 32-10 with just over five minutes remaining in the half. An 8-2 run to end the half for the Blue Jays made it a 25-point lead at 40-15. Seven Blue Jays scored in the first half, led by Hoyd's 10 and Howie's eight. The defense was swarming for JHU, forcing 14 first-half turnovers from the Owls.

The third quarter was much of the same for the Blue Jays. Maggie Wodicka hit a three 18 seconds into the half, sparking a 10-2 run in the first three minutes of the half, pushing the lead all the way up to 33 for JHU. The Owls cut the Blue Jay lead down to 29 in the fourth quarter, but once again Hopkins went on a run, this time a 14-1 run to give JHU its largest lead of the game, 42.

The end result was a 40-point victory for the Blue Jays, winning their 38th straight against the Owls. Johns Hopkins has never lost to Bryn Mawr in series history.

Halie Egan led the way with 13 points in just 19 minutes of game action off the bench. Hoyd finished with 12 points on 5-10 shooting in her first start of the season while Moore added 10 on an efficient 5-8 shooting.

The Blue Jays shot over 48 percent from the field in the contest, knocking down eight triples and forcing 24 turnovers in the contest. JHU improves to 3-2 overall and puts an end to a quick two-game skid.

Johns Hopkins will hit the road on Tuesday night, making the quick trip to Westminster, MD for a 6 p.m. Centennial Conference matchup with McDaniel.
