Game Recap: Football |

Football Breezes on Senior Day

Sophomore Michael Hnatkowsky threw four touchdown passes, the defense allowed only 128 yards, and senior Nate Corvil scored his fifth career defensive touchdown as the Muhlenberg football team rolled past Gettysburg, 49-0, on Senior Day at Scotty Wood Stadium.

The victory game the Mules (8-1, 7-1) their seventh consecutive season with at least eight wins. If the Mules defeat Moravian in their regular-season finale next week, they will clinch a share of their 10th Centennial Conference championship. A win next week would also be the 34th for the senior class, tying the school record set by the previous two classes.

The shutout was the 24th for Muhlenberg in the last 21 years. The Bullets (1-8, 1-7) went three-and-out on 10 of their 13 drives and did not surpass 100 yards of total offense until late in the fourth quarter.

Hnatkowsky finished 21-of-28 for 205 yards, tossing four scoring strikes for the sixth time in 17 career starts. He moved into third place on the program's all-time list with 43 career TD passes.

Muhlenberg took the opening kickoff and drove 75 yards in eight plays to take a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard run by sophomore James Diggs, who carried the majority of the Gettysburg defense into the end zone. Diggs (77 yards on 10 carries) also scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter to make it 14-0.

The Mules extended their lead to 21-0 midway through the second quarter when Hnatkowsky combined with junior Max Kirin for a 25-yard scoring play. Kirin has caught a touchdown pass in seven of nine games this season.

Gettysburg finally picked up its initial first down on the ensuing possession, but the drive ended when sophomore Daymon Fleming recorded his second career interception.

Hnatkowsky threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to junior Chris Hillburn in the final minute of the half, then hit junior Ryan Curtiss from 9 and 11 yards out in the third quarter to make it 42-0.

Corvil closed out the scoring when he intercepted a pass along the sideline and ran an uncontested 26 yards for his third career "pick-six." He also has two touchdowns on fumble recoveries in the end zone.

Junior Todd Spirt was 7-for-7 on extra points, and classmate Yanni Mitropoulos recorded touchbacks on five of his eight kickoffs.

Senior Jack Fitzsimmons and junior Frankie Feaster led the defense with six tackles apiece. Two of Fitzsimmons' were for losses, while Feaster recorded 1½ sacks in addition to his first career interception.

Honored prior to the game were (left to right, above) seniors Luke Wiley, Kyle Oprisko, Matt Gibbon, Olivier Payen, Bobby Merle, Josiah Lawrence-Wright, Dawid Kowal, Matthew Gliatta, Fitzsimmons, Sean Elliott, Corvil and Michael Blank.
