NEW YORK (Feb. 2, 2023) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy wrestling team won its non-conference dual match on Thursday night at Hunter College, 42-11, at the Hunter Sportsplex Gym. The victory improves the Mariners' record to 4-6 overall, while the Hawks fall to 0-8 in defeat.

The match started with a forfeit victory for Hunter at 125 to give the hosts a 6-0 lead. The Mariners responded with back-to-back pins by freshman
Wesley Wydick (Utica, Ohio) at 133 in 2:45 and sophomore
Charlie Lausten (Ashburn, Va.) at 141 in 5:25. The two-straight falls gave USMMA a 12-6 lead.

Eddie Pinc (Medina, Ohio) earned an 8-3 decision at 149, followed by another pin at 157 by classmate
Austin Manning (Virginia Beach, Va.) in 3:22.

The match was clinched by the Mariners after freshmen
Ivan Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) and
Joe Wasilewski (Stafford, Va.) received forfeit victories at 165 and 174, respectively, giving Merchant Marine a 33-6 lead.

After a technical fall loss at 184, the Mariners closed out the match with consecutive wins at 197 by senior
James Cruz (Belleville, N.J.) (forfeit) and at 285 by sophomore
Reid Garrison (Broadway, Va.) (8-1 decision).

Up next, the Mariners travel to Allentown, Pa. for a second-straight weekend of Centennial duals, this time hosted by Muhlenberg College. USMMA will take on the host Mules, Johns Hopkins University and McDaniel College. Action is set to get underway at 12-noon at Muhlenberg's Memorial Hall.
