The Muhlenberg field hockey team went from shutout to shootout, falling 4-3 to 16th-ranked Montclair State.
The Mules (7-3) came into the game leading Division III in shutouts per game and had not played a game all season in which both teams scored. That was far from the case in this game, as each team scored three times in regulation.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the teams went to a shootout. Senior
Jordan Segrave stopped three of four attempts by the Red Hawks (7-3), but Muhlenberg was unable to connect against the Montclair goalie.
Shooting for their fourth win against a nationally ranked Montclair State team since 2012, the Mules took a 2-0 lead in the second quarter with two goals on penalty corners. Junior
Rachel Richards scored the first one and sophomore
Sarah Raab the second, both off insertions from junior
Morgan Tietz.
Richards scored on a break with 5:06 left in the third quarter to complete her first career multiple-goal game and make the score 3-1. But the Red Hawks scored in the final minute of the third quarter and early in the fourth to tie the score.
Muhlenberg had the better of play in the first overtime, taking four shots to none for Montclair. Both teams hit the post in the second overtime, with junior
Marlee Siegel narrowly missing the winning goal for the Mules.
Montclair State had not allowed three goals at home to a non-conference opponent since 2013.
Tietz
(pictured above) recorded two assists in a game for the first time in her career and leads the Mules with five assists this season.
