Baseball Sweeps Elmira

JHU Has Now Won Six Straight Games

GAME ONE
•  Score: Hopkins – 3, Elmira - 2
• Records: Hopkins (6-1) • Elmira (2-3)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium
• Pitching Decision: W – Jaspar Carmichael (1-0) • L – Andy Reed (0-1)
• The Short Story:  The Johns Hopkins baseball team needed 10 innings to defeat visiting Elmira as Matthew Ritchie singled home Robby Faris with the winning run as the Blue Jays took game one by a score of 3-2.

How it Happened
• The game remained scoreless until the fourth when the Soaring Eagles broke through for the first run of the game as Elmira took advantage of two Blue Jay errors in the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
• JHU responded in the bottom of the inning as Frank Clara launched the ball just fair over the left field fence for his second home run of the season.
• Mike Eberle singled to lead off the sixth inning and came around to score the second Blue Jay run of the day, scoring from second on an error by the Soaring Eagles first baseman.
• Elmira came right back in the next inning loading the bases with three straight singles to start the seventh. Mason Ryan reached on a fielder's choice to tie the game at two, but Brent Peterson came in and got a double play to keep the game tied.
• Elmira threatened to take the lead in the eighth as Harrison Zambrano led off the inning with a double, however, the Blue Jays got out of the inning as Carmichael came in to get the third and final out, striking out Mark Ryan looking.
• Carmichael retired the Soaring Eagles in order in the ninth, but Elmira got the leadoff guy on against Hopkins in the top of the tenth. After a fielder's choice advanced the runner to second, Carmichael got a strikeout and then picked off the runner at first to end the inning.
• Pete Manny led off the tenth with a single to left and Faris entered as a pinch runner. After a Mike Ainsworth sacrifice bunt advanced Faris to second, Ritchie stepped up and his single to center scored Faris and gave the Blue Jays the 3-2 walk-off victory.

Inside the Box Score
• Preston Betz got a no-decision as the senior went 6.1 innings allowing five hits two runs (one earned) with one walk and five strikeouts.
• Carmichael earned his first collegiate win as the freshman went 2.1 innings allowing just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
• Nick Cottone went seven innings for the Soaring Eagles allowing just two hits with two runs (one earned) with one walk and 11 strikeouts.


GAME TWO
• Score: JHU – 7, Elmira - 3
• Records: JHU (7-1) • Elmira (2-4)
• Pitching Decision: W – Jack Bunting (2-0) • L – Zach Williamson (0-1)
• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins baseball team extended its winning streak to six with a 7-3 victory over Elmira to sweep the Saturday doubleheader.

How it Happened
• Elmira once again broke the scoreless tie in the fourth as Jansen Crossley singled home the first Soaring Eagle run of the day. Tommy Fogarty followed with a two-run shot to right-center to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage.
• The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the fifth with one out and Mike Eberle knocked in the first JHU run of the game with an RBI groundout. Jared deFaria followed with a single to score another run as Hopkins cut the Elmira lead to 3-2 after five innings of play.
• Johns Hopkins scored five runs in the seventh to take a 7-3 lead. Ritchie worked a walk to score a run while Adam Kohl singled home a run to put JHU in the lead, 4-3. Chris Festa then followed with a sacrifice fly and Austin Sacks concluded the Hopkins scoring in the inning with a pinch-hit 2-run single.
• Jack Bunting, who came into the game in the sixth for Harrison Folk, pitched four perfect innings of relief to earn his second victory of the season as Hopkins took game two by a 7-3 score.

 Inside the Box Score
• Folk went the first five innings allowing five hits and three runs. Bunting with the final four and struck out a career-high nine batters. Neither pitchers allowed a walk in the game.
• Nate Davis led Hopkins with two hits in the game while Sacks had a team-leading two RBIs.

What it Means
• This marked the first meeting between the two programs.

Up Next
• The Blue Jays return to Babb Field tomorrow, Sunday, March 10 for a 2 pm game against Salisbury.
