Men's Lacrosse Doubles Up Widener In Home Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa.—Swarthmore College Men's Lacrosse pulled away from Widener University in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 2019 home opener. The Garnet scored six times in the final frame to beat the Pride 12-6.

Junior Austin Chang and freshman Will Vespole paced the Garnet with four goals a piece. Chang also dealt out a pair of assists and Vespole delivered three helpers.
Jake Ross added a pair of Swarthmore goals, and Zander Levitz and Talbot Child each scored a goal as well.

In goal for the Garnet, Frankie Dillon recorded 11 saves.

Freshman Luke Ingersoll led Swarthmore with six ground balls. Defenders Patrick McAnally and Griffin Soriano each caused four turnovers.

Swarthmore went ahead first with Austin Chang's man-up goal with 7:45 left in the first quarter. Widener responded with a pair of goals, and then Swarthmore's Chang and Levitz struck to regain the lead. Widener and Swarthmore traded goals before halftime and with Vespole's first of the day, the Garnet went to the half up 4-3.

Widener got the first goal of the second half, but Swarthmore then went on a rampage, wounding the Pride with five straight goals. To give Swarthmore a 9-4 advantage with 9:31 remaining in the contest.

The Garnet out-scored the Pride 3-2 the rest of the way and improved to 2-0 overall this season.

Swarthmore is back at home next Saturday at 2 p.m. against Vassar College.
