Johns Hopkins Blanks Washington College, 3-0

Birk Scores the Game-winner for the Blue Jays

The Basics
• Score: #15 Johns Hopkins-3, Washington College-0
• Records: JHU (5-1, 2-0 CC) • WC (1-7, 1-2 CC)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: The 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team erupted for three second-half goals en route to a 3-0 win over visiting Washington College Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Freshman Abby Birk scored what proved to be the game-winner just 10 minutes into the second half as the Blue Jays cashed in on a penalty corner. Birk inserted the corner, sending the ball to junior Katie McErlean at the top of the circle. McErlean fired a hard shot on the Shorewomen's cage and Birk redirected it at the left post to stake Hopkins to a 1-0 lead.
• Less than five minutes later, Hopkins held a two-goal lead. Sophomore Michaela Corvi dribbled towards the right end-line and sent a rocket into the circle. Senior Megan Ophel ran onto the ball and tipped it past Shorewomen goalie Morgan Domanico at 49:53.
• Hopkins cashed in on another corner at the 53:19-mark to complete a three-goal spurt in an eight-minute span. Sophomore Seema Sajjan inserted a corner to McErlean, who dribbled in and shot from the top right side of the circle. Sajjan came in from the far side and redirected McErlean's shot at the left post for her first of the season.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 13-5 all-time against Washington College and has won seven straight in the series. This is the largest margin of victory in the series since a 4-0 Blue Jay win on October 5, 2007. Since that date, seven of the next 11 games were one-goal decisions.
• This was the Blue Jays' second three-goal outing and third shutout of the season.

Inside the Box Score
• Hopkins outshot Washington College, 28-0, and had a 17-0 advantage in corners. Junior Jodie Baris was not forced to make a save in grabbing the shutout. Domanico finished with nine saves and got a defensive save from Sabrina Jenkins.
• McErlean's two assists are a career-best while Corvi picked up her first assist of the season.
