SWARTHMORE, Pa. - No. 9-ranked Swarthmore College Baseball was on the losing end of an 11-inning offensive battle with Muhlenberg College on Tuesday.
The Garnet (16-7, 4-3) had 16 hits in the game, and the Mules (13-12, 3-4) had 18.
Swarthmore was cruising early as starting pitcher
Ryan Warm took the mound in the top of the fourth inning with a 2-0 lead and only 19 pitches delivered. Sophomores
Michael Sepe and
Sam Jacobson drove in the first two runs for the Garnet.
The Mules plated four in the fourth and fifth innings to take a lead, but Swarthmore bounced back to tie the game at four in the bottom of the fifth. Seniors
Jackson Roberts and
Conor Elliott had those RBIs on a double and a groundout, respectively.
Muhlenberg took another one-run lead in the sixth, but junior
Charles Levitt doubled to tie the game once again in the bottom of the frame.
Garnet freshman
Drew McMahan came in and pitched a scoreless seventh. He's now allowed just two hits in five innings over his last five appearances.
Swarthmore regained the lead in the seventh as a single from sophomore
Holden Bridge scored Roberts. Bridge ultimately came around to score with heads up base running after his third stolen base of the game. It was 7-5 at that point.
Sepe gave Swarthmore a three-run lead in the eighth with another RBI on a single to right field.
Muhlenberg mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth and scored three runs. Neither team scored in the 10th, and the Mules scored what would be the game's winning run in the top of the 11th.
Roberts went 3-for-4 with a walk, and Jacobson went 3-for-5. Five Swarthmore players had two hits.
The Garnet will travel to Allentown, Pa., on Friday to face the Mules at their place. Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
