Greyhounds Victorious in Home Opener, Sweeping Haverford

BETHLEHEM, Pa. --- The Moravian University softball squad defeated Haverford College in a non-conference doubleheader, claiming game one 3-2 and winning game two 8-0 in five innings, as the program played their first home contests of the 2022 season at Blue & Grey Field on Saturday.

How It Happened – Game 1

  • Haverford started off the game by scoring in the opening frame on a single to right field
  • The Greyhounds took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when senior shortstop Maddisen Bieber grounded out to third base and drove in senior right fielder Victoria Smith to tie the game at 1-1, then freshman first baseman Lindsey Gawrys put the Greyhounds ahead with a two-RBI single up the middle to put the Blue and Grey ahead 3-1
  • The Fords produced an RBI double in the top of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to 3-2, but Moravian managed to hold on to their lead and win game one
  • Junior pitcher Madison Hummel started in the circle and allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned, two strikeouts and a walk. Hummel threw a complete game, her sixth complete game of the year, and improved to 6-1 on the season

How It Happened – Game 2

  • After two scoreless innings, Moravian jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after senior catcher Brooke Wehr connected on a two-run home run, her third homer of the season, to right-center field
  • Sophomore designated player Emily Silberman added to the Greyhound lead when she homered off the Blue & Grey Field scoreboard in right-center field to put Moravian up 3-0 after four innings
  • Moravian ended the game in the fifth inning when they scored five runs, started by sophomore infielder Ajala Elmore when she singled into center field that scored one run to go ahead 4-0. Silberman homered for her second time in the game, her team-leading fifth of the year, with a three-run blast to deep left field to extend the edge to 7-0. After a Smith double, freshman infielder Holly Walter ended the ball game with an RBI double to left-center field and claimed game two, 8-0, in five innings
  • Freshman pitcher Madi Cunningham got the start in game two, throwing a five-inning shutout, her second shutout of the season, allowing four hits and walking one batter. Cunningham improves to 8-0

Inside the Numbers

  • Moravian had 18 hits on the day as the Greyhounds outhit the Fords 18-11
  • Five Greyhounds ended the day with multi-hit performances, led by Smith who went a perfect 5-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and a walk. Gawrys went 4-for-6 and drove in two RBIs, a walk and scored a run and Silberman was 2-for-4 with her two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. Wehr was 2-for-7 on the day with a home run, two RBIs and a run scored while Elmore was also 2-for-7 with an RBI and scored once.
  • Bieber went 1-for-5 with an RBI while Zettlemoyer was 1-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a walk as Walter had a double and played a runner
