Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season with Swarthmore Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Haverford College women's tennis team marked its return to intercollegiate action over the weekend, opening up the fall season with the Swarthmore Invitational. With a field that included competition from the host Garnet, Franklin & Marshall, and Oberlin, Haverford excelled with a 16-11 overall record, and a 5-5 mark in doubles play. 

Abbey Russano went 3-0 in her singles flight, taking down Sophie Brown of Swarthmore and Marta Laska of Oberlin in straight sets and prevailing over Mackenzie Sherman of F&M in three. First year Rachael Fitzgerald and Summer Williams also notched unblemished singles records over the weekend, with Fitzgerald taking down three Swarthmore opponents in Lara Geib, Spencer Watts, and Oviya Kumaran in straight sets while Williams dispatched Skye Victor and Pressley Daggett of the Diplomats in straight sets before blanking Ruthie Njagi of Swarthmore 6-0, 6-0. 

Elsewhere, Mimi Lavin picked up a pair of three-set victories, prevailing in the tie-breaking third set over her opponents from Oberlin and F&M, while newcomer Ellie Esterowitz also grabbed a pair of wins over opponents from Swarthmore and Oberlin. Annie Barrett notched straight set wins over a pair of Oberlin players, while Lisette Pham triumphed over Hayley Bidwell of F&M. 

The doubles pairing of Anne Tobin and Fitzgerald notched a 2-0 mark, with wins over F&M and Swarthmore. The tandem of Ellie Esterowitz and Emily Oh also grabbed a win over Swarthmore, and Russano and Pham teamed up to triumph over Oberlin. Lavin and Williams picked up the fifth victory in doubles, also  prevailing over a pair from Oberlin. 

Women's tennis is right back on the road this weekend, with the ITA Southeast Regional Championships slated for this weekend at Mary Washington. The tournament will begin with first round action slated for Saturday, September 25 and continuing through Monday, September 27 for players who have advanced to the championship draw.
