Stranick Leads Bullets to Split at W&L

Gettysburg knocks off Meredith in five sets

LEXINGTON, Va.  – Junior Allie Stranick (Havertown, Pa./Merion Mercy) recorded a combined 31 kills and 21 digs as Gettysburg College split two matches on the second day of the Washington and Lee University Invitational Saturday afternoon.

Match Summary
Set 1: Southern Virginia opened up a 4-1 advantage, but Gettysburg rebounded to take a 9-8 lead. The Bullets jumped in front 17-13 following a service error. Southern Virginia rallied for a 5-1 run to tie the match. The score remained tied 23-23 before back-to-back kills by Lindsay Wiedrich and Rath sealed the decision.
Set 2: The second set was a contest of runs with Southern Virginia pulling ahead 10-5 only to see the Bullets storm back to take a 15-14 lead on a block that included junior Faith Adams (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough). Gettysburg would pull in front 23-21, but four consecutive hitting errors by the Bullets handed the win to the Knights.
Set 3: Stranick accounted for the first two points on kills for Gettysburg, but that would be the extent of the advantage for the Bullets. Southern Virginia led by as many as nine down the stretch and closed the decision with an ace.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
This was just the second meeting between Southern Virginia and Gettysburg and the series is now split 1-1.

Match Summary
Set 1: The Bullets trailed most of the set, taking their only lead 9-8 on an ace by Fletcher. Meredith pulled ahead by five, but a quick rally by Gettysburg cut the lead down to one at 22-21. Back-to-back kills by Kenzie Moore and Hailey Long gave the Avenging Angels some breathing room and a final kill by Moore sealed the win.
Set 2: The Orange and Blue broke loose for a quick 7-1 spurt to open the second contest. Gettysburg maintained the advantage throughout the set and pulled in front 14-4 on a block by freshman Kat Wilt (Madison, N.J./Madison) and sophomore Ingrid Bayer (Falls Church, Va./Bishop O'Connell). Meredith sliced the deficit down to one five times, but the Bullets held on and finished out the set with a kill by Stranick.
Set 3: Trailing 7-5, the Avenging Angels turned in the next five points and maintained the lead for the remainder of the set. After pulling into a 13-13 tie, the Bullets were unable to string together consecutive points and Meredith pulled away.
Set 4: The Avenging Angels collapsed offensively in the fourth frame, committing 10 hitting errors and posting a negative hitting percentage (-.077). The Bullets took full advantage, mounting a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead and seized a 23-11 lead on three consecutive errors by Meredith. Stranick completed the win with a kill.
Set 5: Stranick knocked down the first two kills of the final frame and Gettysburg rolled out to a 5-1 lead. The junior outside hitter ran off three consecutive aces to build the advantage to 10-2 and completed her fifth double-double of the season with the match-clinching kill.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Gettysburg remained perfect in three meetings against Meredith.

All-Tournament
Junior Allie Stranick and freshman Zanze Kuba-McCoy were each named to the All-Tournament Team at Washington and Lee. Stranick was named to All-Tournament Team for the sixth time in her career after averaging 3.8 kills and 2.9 digs per set and posting a pair of double-doubles in three matches. Kuba-McCoy posted 16 kills in her collegiate debut against Washington and Lee and finished the tournament with 27 kills and 12 digs.
