SWARTHMORE, Pa. –
Samie Martin scored in the final minute of overtime as Swarthmore College Field Hockey defeated Muhlenberg College, 3-2, on Tuesday night at Clothier Field.
Martin collected the
Andie Tappenden rebound and flicked the shot into the upper right corner with 28 seconds remaining in the extra period. The junior's overtime goal is her second game winning goal of the week, as she knocked home the game-winner on Saturday against Gettysburg.
The overtime session saw
Aron Lankford save two shots by Rachel Richards separated by just seconds.
Just after four minutes of play, Swarthmore opened the scoring as
Marion Carr found the back of the net on a corner from
Chelsea Semper.
The Garnet went into the half without allowing a shot on goal by the Mules.
Tappenden started the second half off with a coast to coast goal as Swarthmore took a two goal advantage. Muhlenberg would answer in the 40th minute as Morgan Tietz secured a failed clear for a goal. Less than five minutes remaining in the game, Marlee Siegel tied the game on a breakaway goal.
Lankford recorded three saves in overtime, and seven total for the game.
The Garnet improved to 7-9 overall and 3-6 in conference action, while Muhlenberg dropped to 9-7 and 3-6. Swarthmore returns to the field at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday as they close out the season at Haverford.
