Field Hockey Topples No. 6 TCNJ

EWING, N.J. - The Ursinus College field hockey team bent but refused to break in Tuesday's heavyweight showdown at No. 6 TCNJ, and the Bears' resolve was rewarded handsomely as Jordan Moore deposited the game-winning goal in a 2-1 double-overtime classic.

Moore's golden goal gave the 15th-ranked Bears (4-2) their first victory at perennial powerhouse TCNJ since 2010 and first top-10 road win since 2014. It came on a corner 1:42 into the second extra session, when Jamie Mayer passed the ball from the middle of the circle to Moore on the left side of the cage, and the latter beat the goalie low for the walk-off.

TCNJ (4-2) dominated in shots (21-7) and corners (19-6), but a career day from Jordan Ulsh and a historic effort from Erin Mclhenny, who matched her own program record with three defensive saves, allowed the Bears to pick up a monumental win on the road.

The Bears got off to a quick start as Devon Carroll plugged the back of the cage just over a minute into the contest. The Lions began to assert control over the rest of the period, outshooting the Bears, 7-2, and finding an equalizing goal as Jess Hatch fired home a rebound from a goalmouth flurry following a corner insert.

The TCNJ pressure continued into the second period, when McIlhenny came up with another huge defensive save - her third of the season - to prevent the hosts from taking their first lead. Ulsh and the back line held strong, and the Bears got their attack untracked in the final minute of the first half as Mary Lauren Franz ripped a hard shot into the TCNJ goalie and slid the rebound just wide.

McIlhenny came to the rescue again early in the third quarter, posting a second defensive save before Ulsh cleared a follow-up shot as the Lions looked to grab a lead with a series of corner chances. The rest of the frame passed without incident, and the teams entered the final stanza still knotted at 1-1.

TCNJ's next salvo came with about three minutes to go, when they unleashed a trio of shots on the Ursinus cage. Ulsh was there to stop two of them, and McIlhenny - who else? - was right there on the line to bat away another shot that had deflected up into the air to complete her hat trick of defensive saves.

The first extra period was devoid of much action, and Moore made quick work of the second overtime.

Notes

  • McIlhenny became the eighth player in program history to reach double-digit defensive saves for a career

  • The last six meetings with TCNJ have been decided by one goal, and three of them have gone to overtime
