As a team, the Ducks fell to No. 25 Messiah College (28-17), Wilkes University (27-24) and the State University of New York at Cortland (25-20) before closing the day with a 27-22 victory over the University of Southern Maine. Each of the three setbacks were not decided until the final bout of the dual. The 1-3 mark at the North-South Duals left the Ducks with a 6-6 dual record on the season.
Borai began his day by pinning Messiah's Dalton Daugherty. The fall was Borai's first of the year after earning nine in his junior campaign. Borai earned decision victories over Wilkes' Brock Horton (11-4) and Cortland's Matt Maquet (4-2) before capping his day with a major decision over Southern Maine's Brad Beaulieu (9-1). The four victories improved the Toms River, New Jersey native's overall record to 10-1.
Stanich, the nation's top-ranked wrestler at 141 pounds, totaled two technical falls, a major, and a pin to run his season record to 21-1. The Roxbury, New Jersey native began the day with a technical fall over Messiah's Nick Nunez; Stanich was leading 17-1 at the time of the stoppage. He earned his second tech fall of the day over Wilkes' Tommy Stokes, holding a 17-2 advantage at the time of the stoppage.Â
Stanich picked up an 18-5 major over Cortland's Alex D'Angelo and capped his strong day with an early pin of Southern Maine's Austin Shorey in the final dual of the day. The two tech falls pushed Stanich's team-leading total to seven.
Van Sickell continued his recent run of success, picking up two majors and a pin en route to a four-win day that pushed his season win total to 13. The Little Silver, New Jersey native has earned victories in 11 of his last 12 bouts.
The 157-pounder began his day with a 5-2 decision over Messiah's Kevin Edwards. He then picked up consecutive majors over Wilkes' John Ritter (11-3) and Cortland's Gianno Silba (12-4) before closing his day with a pin of Southern Maine's Zach Thompson.
Dooley continues to impress in his inaugural season on Castle Point, picking up three decisions and a pin on the afternoon to improve his season record to 15-3. The Hillsborough, New Jersey native reeled off three straight decisions before pinning Southern Maine's Noah Regalado to close out his day. The fall was Dooley's second of the season and the 184-pounder has four victories with bonus points on the season.Â
Additionally, sophomore
Brett Kaliner totaled three wins on the day, with his only setback coming via a 14-11 decision to No. 4 Stephen Maloney of Messiah. The West Chester, Pennsylvania native improved to 18-5 on the year.
The Ducks opened the day against Messiah and the teams alternated victories over the first eight bouts, with Borai's pin and Stanich's tech fall helping Stevens open a six-point advantage.Â
Messiah reclaimed a two-point lead after Matt Pangle's major at 165 before Dooley earned his first victory of the competition to put the Ducks back in front at 17-16.Â
Joe Embleton pinned sophomore
Matthieu Dupuy at 197 and Denny Karas won via forfeit at heavyweight to give the Falcons the dual victory.
Similar to the dual with nationally-ranked Messiah, bonus-point victories at 141, 149 and 157 gave the Ducks an 18-3 lead over Wilkes before the Colonels rallied with pins at 165 and 174.Â
Dooley pinned Alexis Santana-Quintana, but Wilkes totaled 12 points in the final two bouts to edge Stevens.
Against Cortland, victories in four of the first five bouts of the dual saw Stevens build a 17-3 advantage. Cortland rallied at 165 and 174 before Dooley gave Stevens a 20-13 lead after an 8-5 decision over J.P. Puca. Cortland closed out the dual by earning maximum points at 197 and 285 to secure the come-from-behind victory.
