Game Notes

The Franklin & Marshall (3-1) field hockey team returns to Tylus Field to play York (Pa.) (3-1) and Kean (3-1) this week after playing two games on the road. The Diplomats fell to eighth-ranked Messiah 4-1 Wednesday night before defeating Montclair State 2-0 Saturday evening.

Last Week

The Diplomats saw their first loss of the season come against eighth-ranked Messiah Wednesday night. Keira Boensch had the Diplomats lone goal that came in the fourth quarter off an assist from Carolina Riley. The goal was Boensch's second goal of the season and Riley's second assist this fall. F&M had all eight shots on net in the game. Read the recap here.

F&M bounced back Saturday evening with a 2-0 shutout victory against Montclair State. The Diplomats struck first in the third quarter when Boensch stole the ball in the offensive zone. A crossing pass to Jessica Miller who backhanded a shot past the MSU goalkeeper put F&M up 1-0. Nine minutes later, Sophie Carroll stole a pass from a Red Hawk defender, setting herself up with a breakaway situation. Carroll's initial shot was saved, but she collected her rebound and fired a shot into the left side of the net to give the Diplomats a 2-0 lead. F&M outshot Montclair State 14-5 in the victory. Last Time

York knocked off then sixth-ranked F&M 2-1 in an overtime thriller last season. After Maddie Bickel's shot was saved, Carolina Riley knocked in the rebound to put the Diplomats up 1-0 in the second period. York responded with the equalizer six minutes into the third quarter. Sydney Lippe made three big saves in the overtime period, but the York attack was too much as F&M couldn't get out of the defensive zone and the Spartans scored the game winner 4:51 into overtime. Read the recap here.

Kean and F&M last met in the 2018 season opener where the Diplomats earned a 1-0 win in overtime. Six minutes into overtime, F&M maintained possession of a penalty corner. Erin Coverdale '19 sent her second shot of the game into the bottom-right corner of the net for the game winner. Goalkeeper Illianna Santangelo '18 made nine saves to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard in the game. Read the recap here.

Ranked Foes

With games against 16th-ranked Christopher Newport and eighth-ranked Messiah, F&M faced back-to-back regular season games against ranked opponents for the first time since 2016. Then sixth-ranked Franklin & Marshall fell to second-ranked Messiah 3-2 in overtime before beating fourth-ranked Ursinus 1-0. Earlier this season, F&M upset Christopher Newport 2-0.

Racking Up Points

Keira Boensch carries a three-game points streak into Wednesday's game at York. Boensch helped F&M upset Christopher Newport with a goal and an assist in the match.
