Second Half Run Propels Men's Lacrosse to 14-12 Win at Haverford

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Ursinus men's lacrosse team overcame a halftime deficit to pick up a 14-12 win over Haverford in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday night.

 

With the win, the Bears improved to 5-6 overall and 2-2 in Centennial Conference action. Meanwhile, the Fords fell to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

 

Haverford capitalized on a Bears turnover and scored in the first minute of the game to take an early 1-0 lead. The Fords then turned in a fast break clear attempt into their second goal of the night at the 12:41-mark to extend their lead. Junior Jeremy Calabro got the Bears on the board at the 9:05-mark after receiving a strong feed from classmate Tyler Neal and cut the deficit down to 2-1. Calabro tied the game at the 5:17-mark after junior Erik Ojert completed a tic-tac-toe pass to him directly in front of the crease. Haverford took the lead back at 3-2 heading into the second quarter before junior Jake Ojert scored on the Bears opening possession to tie the game at three. The back and forth first half continued with the Fords and Bears trading goals within a 27-second span to leave the score tied at four. Erik Ojert knotted the game at five with 4:58 left in the first half following a Fords goal, but Haverford capped a lengthy ensuing possession with a goal to take a 6-5 lead into the half.

 

Junior Chase Rondeau let a long shot rip to tie the game at the 13:25-mark before senior Stephen Schoenborn gave the Bears their first lead of the game with 8:14 left in the third quarter on a man-up opportunity. The Fords answered just 58 seconds later with a goal to tie the game at seven, but Ursinus closed out the quarter with three-straight goals in a span of 1:58 to take a 10-7 lead. Senior Tommy Reinhart started the run by fighting off his defender for his first tally of the game and freshman Dominic Nottoli followed seven seconds later with a goal after winning the faceoff. Neal capped the burst with his second of the night at the 1:55-mark. Calabro extended the Bears lead to 11-7 just 1:08 into the fourth quarter before the Fords ended the Ursinus run by cutting the lead to 11-8 at the 12:32-mark. Jake Ojert notched his second goal of the night on the ensuing Bears possession to give Ursinus a 12-8 advantage just 48 seconds later and Calabro extended the advantage to 13-8 at the 9:35-mark. Erik Ojert cashed in on another man-up opportunity at the 7:01-mark to put the Bears up 14-8 which turned out to be the final Ursinus goal of the evening. Haverford closed the game with four-straight goals but ultimately ran out of time to pull off a rally.

 

The Bears held a 51-46 shot advantage for the game and a 36-29 edge in shots on goal. Haverford edged Ursinus in ground balls at 38-30 and won 16 of the 28 faceoffs on the night. Bears sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Singer earned the win after making 17 saves in the full 60 minutes while Fords goalkeeper Jacob Abraham suffered the loss despite making 22 saves during the full game action. Calabro led the Bears by matching his career-high with four goals and Neal posted four points behind two goals and two assists. Erik and Jake Ojert each posted three points on two goals and one assist in the win as well.

 

Ursinus returns to action on Saturday, April 16th as they will host 10th-ranked Franklin & Marshall at noon in Centennial Conference action.
