Women's Tennis Rolls Past York

YORK, Pa. - The Ursinus College women's tennis team wrapped up its fall campaign with a dominating 8-1 victory over a stout York (Pa.) side on Saturday.

The Bears (2-0) made it look easy against a Spartans squad that finished 11-2, won its first MAC Commonwealth championship, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

Brenna Trkula made her last match one to remember, teaming with Avery Samer for an 8-5 victory at No. 2 doubles. It marked the 35th career win for Trkula, who will graduate in December.

Cara Freedman and Shannon Stewart proved a promising pair in their initial grouping at No. 3 doubles, snagging an 8-2 result at No. 3. York won its only match of the day at first doubles, where Elsa Oestermarker and Lauren Ostermann edged Allie Armour and Maddie Russell by an 8-5 count.

Armour and Russell rebounded nicely from their doubles setback with convincing singles wins. Armour secured a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Oestermarker at No. 1, and Russell took down Chloe Doyle 6-2, 6-3.

Claire Burke netted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 3, and Ava Compagnoni won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 5. Samer blanked her No. 6 singles opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Stewart wrapped up the Bears' impressive day with a 6-0, 2-6, 10-1 triumph opposite Brianna Rohrer at No. 4.

The Bears are back in action on March 19 with a trip to Lebanon Valley.
