Sophomore
Luca Colestock of the Muhlenberg wrestling team began the 2019-20 season the same way he ended 2018-19: by winning a tournament.
Colestock's 197-pound championship at the Ned McGinley Invitational highlighted a strong opening for the Mules, who came in sixth in a strong field. Their 83½ team points were 17½ more than they scored at the same tournament last year.
Four other Muhlenberg wrestlers won places, with senior
Jimmy Fratantoni reaching the final at 184. Seniors
Dylan Schwartz (165) and
Scott Schaeffer (HWT) claimed fifth-place finishes, while senior
Brian Jamison (165) came in sixth.
In the final tournament of Colestock's freshman campaign, he won the Northeast/Mideast Futures Tournament at Muhlenberg. And the opponent he faced in the final of that one was the same he faced this year at King's, again defeating him by major decision in a match that was close until the final period. Colestock, seeded third, also recorded a pin and a technical fall en route to the title.
Fratantoni earned the top seed at 184 and won a major decision and two close decisions to advance to his third final in the last two years. He was decisioned by a Roger Williams opponent in a matchup of two wrestlers who appear in the d3wrestle.com preseason rankings.
Both Schwartz and Jamison hung tough against Taylor Shay, a returning All-American from Roger Williams who is currently ranked fifth in Division III. Schwartz battled him through regulation, two sudden-victory periods and four rideout periods before finally falling in a marathon semifinal match. Jamison, who was unseeded, conceded only one takedown to Shay in a 4-2 quarterfinal loss.
Jamison won his four other bouts, including a thrilling 18-16 decision in the consolation bracket against an Oneonta wrestler. Jamison led a 13-3 lead slip away before scoring a takedown with 26 seconds left for the winning points.
Other notables from the tournament:
• Sophomore
Greg Baum (149) dropped his first bout but roared back with four wins in the consolation bracket, including three straight by pins. Sophomore
Scott Horry also notched three pins at 174.
• Sophomore Yonbüe Tanco went 2-2 at 141, coming back from a 6-1 deficit to win his opening bout with a third-period pin. He also came back after giving up an early takedown in his second win.
• In a different kind of comeback, sophomore
Ronnie GreveraÂ
(pictured above) had his 165-pound match halted when he dislocated a finger, but after receiving medical attention he pinned his opponent.
• Freshmen
Michael Ruane (141) and
Ryan Kaplow (HWT) picked up their first career wins in very different ways. Ruane scored a techincal fall in the first period, while Kaplow forced overtime with a last-second takedown before going on to win on a rideout.
