Women’s Tennis Moves Closer to Playoff Spot

Bullets one win away from postseason berth

BALTIMORE, Md. – Gettysburg College was unable to put an end to No. 23 Johns Hopkins University's 129-match winning streak in Centennial Conference play, but the Bullets moved one step closer to securing a spot in the postseason for the first time following Tuesday's results.

Gettysburg (10-7, 5-4 CC) lost to a ranked foe for the second time in as many days with a 9-0 setback at Johns Hopkins (13-2, 9-0 CC). Despite the loss, the Bullets are on the edge of a postseason bid thanks to a 5-4 win by Bryn Mawr College (9-10, 3-6 CC) over Ursinus College (9-10, 3-6 CC). Gettysburg is clinging to fifth in the league standings and the final spot in the CC tournament. The only team that can pass the Orange and Blue is Washington College (6-7, 4-4 CC). The Shorewomen play Dickinson College (6-8, 3-5 CC) and Johns Hopkins to close out the season this week.

A loss by Washington or a victory against Ursinus this Saturday will clinch the Bullets a spot in the CC Championship for the first time since its inception in 2006. Gettysburg owns the tiebreakers over both Dickinson and Washington by virtue of 5-4 victories earlier this season.

The Blue Jays out-paced the Bullets in doubles play, dropping only three games total in the sweep. Johns Hopkins won five of the six singles matches in straight-sets. Senior Maddie Class (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) narrowly missed scoring a point for the team after splitting the first two sets against Anya Gunewardena. Gunewardena took the first 6-3, while Class won the second set by the same count. The Johns Hopkins player came out on top in the tiebreaker 10-3.

Gettysburg caps the regular season against Ursinus this Saturday at 10 a.m.
