• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team hit eight three-pointers in the first half as the Blue Jays snapped their eight-game losing streak to Muhlenberg with a 68-40 victory on the road on Thursday night.
How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the first half on fire from deep as JHU connected on five shots from beyond the arch. Two free throws from
Madison McGrath gave the Blue Jays an 8-3 lead at 5:31 and a three from
Lyndsey Hoyd at 4:59 increased the lead to 11-3 followed by a three from
Lillian Scott put JHU up 11 with 3:39 remaining. Johns Hopkins outscored the Mules 9-3 in the quarter's final 2:42 to end the first 10 minutes of play with a 23-6 lead.
• The Blue Jays continued to be on fire from three as
Lexie Scholtz opened the second with a three to give Hopkins a 20-point lead over Muhlenberg. Sara Dilly hit a three for the Mules to make the score 34-12 with 4:49 remaining and Madison Kirchofer hit a jumper at 4:12 to make the score 34-14. Hopkins then went on a 9-1 run in the final 3:25 of the half to take a 43-15 lead into the break.
• Two free throws from
Diarra Oden gave Hopkins its largest lead of the game as the Blue Jays took a 45-15 lead at 8:33. A 9-0 run from the Mules cut the JHU lead to 45-24 at 5:02 in the third, and a layup from Amanda Morello at 3:55 made it a 20-point JHU lead at 46-26.
Elise Moore put the Blue Jays back up by 30 with a minute remaining, however, Ny Thompson hit a three with six seconds left to make the score 59-33.
• Emilie Benton cut into the Blue Jay lead with a three at 4:30 in the fourth to make the score 63-40, but JHU finished the game on a 5-0 run capped by a free throw by
Keiko Fox to give the Blue Jays a 68-40 win.
What it Means
• Hopkins holds a 27-24 all-time record in the series and snapped the Mules eight-game winning streak between the two teams. The 40 points are the fewest points Muhlenberg has scored against Johns Hopkins.
• The 43 points in the first half are the most for the Blue Jays since JHU scored 47 against Swarthmore on November 30, 2017.
Inside the Box Score
• Scott led all scorers with 20 points in the game and Oden added nine. Moore and Wodick each scored eight in the contest while Scholtz and McGrath added seven points.
• Scholtz and Oden led Hopkins with seven rebounds each as JHU outrebounded the Mules 43-32.
• The Hopkins defense held the Mules to their lowest point total this season and it's the third time this season the Blue Jays have allowed 40 points or fewer in a game.
• Hopkins shot 43.6% from the field in the game while Muhlenberg shot just 27.8%.
