The first career tournament title for sophomore
Anson Dewar highlighted the second day of the Messiah Petrofes Invitational for the Muhlenberg wrestling team.
Nine other Mules placed in the tournament, with junior
Joey Lamparelli coming in second at 125 and sophomore
Brandon Bowles placing third at 157.
Dewar, seeded third, pinned the second seed from Mount Union in the second period of his semifinal bout. In the final, he faced the top seed, a King's wrestler who was a 2022 NCAA qualifier.
Dewar opened the scoring with a double-leg takedown with 36 seconds left in the first period and rode his opponent out for the remaining time. Dewar chose down for the second period and struggled to escape initially, but with about 40 seconds left he reversed his opponent to his back to add six points to his advantage.
The King's wrestler started down in the third and escaped in the first 15 seconds, but there was no further scoring, and Dewar won the championship with an 8-1 decision.
Dewar, whose previous best place was second at the Wilkes Invitational last year, is undefeated (9-0) on the season.
Lamparelli reached the final with a 6-1 decision against a familiar regionally ranked opponent from Alvernia (the two have faced each other three times already this season) to set up a match against the similarly named Joey Manginelli from Springfield. Manginelli, a 2022 NCAA qualifier who is ranked third in Division III by the NWCA, recorded a takedown and near-fall in the first period for the decisive points in a 7-2 decision.
Bowles dropped a 2-1 decision in the semifinals for his first loss of the season but rebounded to score a major decision and a decision in two consolation bouts, securing his third-place finish with an overtime takedown of a Mount Union wrestler who he had defeated earlier in the tournament.
Sophomore
Nico Berlingeri (165)Â and freshman
Ryan Fairchild (184) both recorded wins on the second day to advance to the consolation finals. Sophomore
Brian McCaw (pictured above) came in fifth at 125 and tied Bowles for the team lead with five wins in the tournament.
The Mules finished fourth in the standings, behind two nationally ranked teams.
