Tartans Walk Off on Wild Pitch to Split Sunday's Game

(CLERMONT, Fla.) – Sophomore Emily Song (Mount Arlington, N.J. / Roxbury) scored the winning run in extra innings and knocked in the other in a 2-1 victory for the Carnegie Mellon University softball team against Marietta College (1-1), as the Tartans split action on Sunday, March 8 at The Spring Games in Clermont, Florida. Earlier in the day the Tartans fell 12-4 to Ursinus (2-1) and are now 2-2 for the season.

The Tartans were led by sophomore Io Jette-Kouri (Pasadena, Calif. / Westridge) in the loss to Ursinus, as she hit safely in all three of her at bats with a double and two RBIs. Her first hit and RBI came in the first inning when she plated sophomore Audra Scheinman (Falls Church, Va. / George C. Marshall) with a single up the middle. Earlier in the inning, Scheinman singled to left field knocking in Song who led off with a walk and stole two bases.

After Ursinus tied the game in the bottom of the second, Jette-Kouri hit a double in the third to score Scheinman for a 3-2 Tartan lead.

Ursinus then strung together five hits to score seven in the bottom of the third. With a six-run lead entering the sixth inning, the Bears scored two in their half ending the game on a bases loaded single by Heather Lazer.

Freshman Adriana Agosta (Grosse Pointe, Mich. / Grosse Pointe South) pitched six innings for the Tartans, scattering three hits and holding the Pioneers scoreless until the sixth when a wild pitch plated the tying run.

Song's two-out double to left center in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Tartans the lead when sophomore Summer Faille (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Westlake) scored after leading off the inning with a double to center field.

Sophomore Scotty McGee (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Huntington Beach) earned the win in relief after striking out the side in the eighth inning with two runners on base.

Song started the eighth inning on second base due to international tiebreaker rules. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and with one out, scored the winning run on another wild pitch.

The Tartans will next play Mount St. Joseph on Monday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m. before facing Emmanuel (Mass.) College at 6:15 p.m.
