The Muhlenberg wrestling team opened its 2021-22 with a strong performance at the Alvernia Invitational.
Four Mules won their brackets, two others reached the finals, and four placed third. Muhlenberg sent 26 wrestlers to the tournament, and 21 of them won at least one contested bout. Even more impressively, 19 of the 26 were getting their first taste of collegiate competition.
Three of the newcomers won their brackets - sophomore
Ricky Caamano at 133 and freshmen
Joey Lamparelli at 125 and
Fletcher Goodman at 174.Â
The fourth Mule to take first place is no stranger to success on the mat - senior
Luca Colestock. The 2020 NCAA qualifier opened the season with a bang, sweeping to the 197-pound title with four straight pins. The "longest" of the four bouts was 1:31, against a fellow 2020 NCAA qualifier from Alvernia. Colestock was on the mat for a total of less than five minutes in his four bouts, winning his fourth tournament for Muhlenberg and surpassing the 50-win mark for his career. Â
Caamano
(pictured above) won on a technical fall and a pair of close decisions, reversing his Alvernia opponent in the third period of the final for what proved to be the difference in a 4-2 win. After opening with a pin and a technical fall, Lamparelli overcame an early 2-0 deficit to win his final, 4-3, and become the Mules' first 125-pounder to capture a tournament title since 2014. Goodman recorded two decisions sandwiched around a first-period pin.
Senior
Ronnie Grevera matched the best tournament place of his career with the runner-up spot at 165. Freshman
Chris Sockler advanced to the 149 final with a major decision and a pin.
Freshmen
Frank DiEsso (125) and
Anson Dewar (157) and senior
Ramiro Osuna (heavyweight) each rebounded from a loss in their first match to place third. DiEsso had two first-period pins and a major decision in his four wins, while Osuna, whose lone loss was to a 2020 NCAA qualifier, also recorded two first-period pins before notching a 6-0 decision in the consolation final. Dewar pinned the middle of his three opponents in the consolation bracket.
Sophomore
Christopher Dalmau went 3-1 to place third at 133.
In addition to Lamparelli, freshmen
Danny Grigas (125) and
Sean Quaye (heavyweight) and sophomoresÂ
Jibreal Moore (141),
Ezra Toll (165) and
Deon Savage (184) recorded pins in their first career bouts.
