Penn St. Harrisburg Beats Hopkins in Back-And-Forth Affair, 10-8 in 11 Innings

Nate Davis Hit Game-Tying Home Runs in the Ninth and Tenth Innings

The Basics
• Score: JHU – 8, Penn St. Harrisburg – 10 (11 Innings)
• Records: Hopkins (21-9) • Penn St. Harrisburg (22-8-1)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Babb Field
• Pitching Decision: W – Brendan Riotto (1-3) • L – John Donohue (0-1)
• The Short Story: It was a wild back-and-forth affair that could not be decided in just nine innings as the Johns Hopkins baseball team rallied from a 6-1 deficit to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth, however, Penn St. Harrisburg proved to have too much power as the Lions came into Babb Field and defeated the Blue Jays, 10-8, in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon.

How it Happened
• The Lions took advantage of two hit batters and two Blue Jay errors to score five runs in the second inning. The Blue Jays got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a double steal as Mark Lopez broke for second and Tim Kutcher then beat the throw home for the first JHU run of the game.
• After the rocky second, Brian Linton settled down as he worked around a double in the third and retired the Blue & White in order in the fourth.
• Hopkins began to mount a comeback as the Blue Jays scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to make it a 6-5 game. Pete Manny hit his first collegiate home run as the senior came up as a pinch hitter and launched a 1-1 pitch over the wall to score Kutcher, who doubled and stole third earlier in the inning. Chris DeGiacomo and Kutcher notched RBIs in the seventh to make it a one-run Lions lead.
• Nate Davis led off the bottom of the ninth with a solo shot to left to tie the game at six. Hopkins then loaded the bases with no outs, but Penn St. Harrisburg brought in a fifth infielder and a home-to-first double play and a pop out ended the Blue Jay threat and sent the game to the tenth.
• Zachary Koroneos broke the tie in the 10th with a two-run shot to right to make it an 8-6 ball game. After Matthew Ritchie walked and advanced to second on a ground out by Mike Eberle, Davis came up to the plate and once again tied it with one swing of the bat as he took the 2-2 pitch over the fence to tie the game once again.
• The fifth home run of the day, and second on the day for Penn St. Harrisburg, proved to be the winner as Bret Williams hit a two-run shot to give the visitors a 10-8 lead and JHU would be retired in order in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
