Football Falls in Season Finale at F&M

Diplomats claim Lincoln Trophy with 55-7 decision

LANCASTER, Pa.  – Franklin & Marshall College (6-4, 5-4 CC) claimed the Lincoln Trophy for the fourth consecutive season with a 55-7 victory over Gettysburg College (1-9, 1-8 CC) in the regular-season finale at Shadek Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Game Summary
  • First Quarter: After going three-and-out on its opening drive, Franklin & Marshall put together three consecutive scoring drives with Perschy rushing 25 yards for the first and then throwing two long passes to Benfatti.
  • Second Quarter: The Bullets forced three turnovers in the second quarter. Sophomore Mike Galaida (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) stripped the ball from Farmer and LaMore recovered the fumble for the first turnover. LaMore and freshman Justin Adedinsewo (Pottstown, Pa./The Hill School) each recorded interceptions on the Diplomats' next two drives. Gettysburg was unable to convert on the turnovers, while F&M posted a late touchdown with less than 30 seconds to go in the half.
  • Third Quarter: The hosts ate up nearly 10 minutes of clock with two 60-plus yard scoring drives to start the third quarter. Gettysburg jumped on the scoreboard with its longest drive of the game, marching 65 yards on 10 plays. DeBenedetto caught a pair of passes for 33 yards and Edmond polished off the drive with a three-yard plunge into the end zone.
  • Fourth Quarter: The Diplomats added two more scores in the final period, including a blocked punt return for a touchdown to set the final score.
 
By the Numbers
  • Senior Evan Tannenbaum (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) tied the program record with 12 punts and broke his own mark with 470 punt yards. He finished the season with the second-most punt yards (2,905) and punt attempts (77) in program history. Tannenbaum also finished as the Gettysburg all-time leader in punt yards (7,271) and punt attempts (196).
  • Senior Justin Geisel (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) converted an extra-point attempt during Saturday's game. He concluded his career 13th on the program's all-time list with 158 points on 71 extra points and 29 field goals. Geisel ranks second in career field goals made.
  • Edmond finished his first collegiate season with 600 rushing yards. That ranks as the fourth-best rushing total by a first-year in school history.
  • LaMore finished second in the conference with 10 pass break-ups.
  • Sophomore Alex Raimondo (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville Area) recorded at least one tackle for a loss in all but one game this season. The sophomore defensive end ended the year fourth in the CC with 15 tackles for a loss and second with 9.5 sacks.
 
Where the Series Stands Now
Saturday's game marked the 105th all-time meeting between the two schools. Franklin & Marshall holds a slim 50-48-7 advantage.
