HAVERFORD, Pa.- The Haverford College field hockey team (2-1) earned a 1-0 shutout victory over Stockton (1-2) at home Wednesday, defending the turf at Swan Field behind a lockdown 60 minutes in cage from Mary Smith and a game-winning tally from first year Naomi York in the 25th minute of action.

Haverford held a 16-9 advantage in shots on the afternoon, and tallied nine corners to just four for the visitors. Stockton came out firing with two shots off a penalty corner in the fourth minute before Delaney Snowden rocketed a shot on the Haverford side in the sixth minute with both sides still feeling out the rhythm of the early goings on a cool, damp day on campus. Zora Dallmann shot wide of the cage in the 10th, but Haverford had an offensive flurry in the 23rd minute. Holly Vincent fired in a shot on cage, and after a whistle in the circle, a penalty corner was awarded to the Fords.

Dalia Bercow found York off that corner try, and the first year banged home a slicing shot past Kylie Mitchell for the early advantage. The goal proved to be all Haverford needed in the afternoon, as the Fords defense held stout while the attack got to work in the final third, firing off four shots in the 32nd minute and another in the 35th. Snowden had a strong chance blocked in the 45th minute, but Haverford did not allow another Stockton shot until Jamilyn Hawkins and Bailey Kirsten each had solid looks in the 52nd minute.

The Ospreys' last chance came off the stick of Alexandria Palumbo, who fired wide in the 59th minute of action.

Snowden paced the Fords with four shots total, while York added three. Palumbo had five to lead the Ospreys. Mitchell grabbed eight saves despite the loss while Smith picked up her second consecutive shutout with a five-save effort between the pipes for the hosts.

Haverford improves to 3-0 all-time against Stockton as the squads were meeting for the first time since the 2013 season.

The Fords now face their longest road trip of the season as they head out to the Hampton Roads area of Virginia for a matchup at No. 16 Christopher Newport. The contest is slated to begin at noon  Saturday and will represent the first of five consecutive road contests before the Fords return home three weeks from today for a battle with Bi-co neighbor Bryn Mawr on September 28 (5:30 p.m.).
