PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - No. 5-ranked Swarthmore College Baseball proved its worth on Monday, knocking off No. 1 Wooster 13-6 with two big rallies late in the game.
The Garnet, serving as the visiting team in the neutral site game, led 2-0 after three and a half innings. Seniors
Charles Levitt and
Jackson Roberts recorded those RBIs in the first and third innings, respectively.
The Fighting Scots scratched out three runs against junior starting pitcher
Jack Corkery to take a lead in the fourth. Corkery settled down and didn't give up another run in his first outing of the season, finishing with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed over six innings pitched. He served as Swarthmore's closer in 2018, setting the program's single-season saves record with eight.
Swarthmore also helped Corkery pick up a win by plating five in the seventh. Juniors
Jared Gillen and
Cole Beeker as well as senior
Conor Elliott were responsible for those RBIs. Gillen, Beeker and junior
Holden Bridge all had three hits and one extra-base hit apiece. Gillen scored four runs, and Beeker had five RBIs.
The Garnet returned for an encore in the eighth, scoring six more times. Beeker, Bridge and sophomore
Coleson Hebble drove in runs.
Wooster scored the second half of its six runs in the ninth inning. However, junior
Zach Gonzalez earned the three-inning save with three strikeouts and no walks.
The Garnet and Fighting Scots also met in the Division III World Series last season, and Swarthmore won 10-5. It was the first time in program history that the Garnet won a game in the D3 World Series.
Swarthmore returns to the diamond on Tuesday for games against SUNY-Canton at 10 a.m. and Susquehanna at 1:30 p.m.
