Blue Jays Top McDaniel, 3-0, to Win Third Straight CC Title

Hada Earns MVP Honors in Straight-Set Victory

The Basics
• Score: Johns Hopkins-3, McDaniel-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-22)
• Records: Johns Hopkins (21-7), McDaniel (21-8)
• Location: Mayser Center • Lancaster, PA
• The Short Story:  The second-seeded Johns Hopkins volleyball team won its third consecutive Centennial Conference title on Sunday as the Blue Jays swept fourth-seeded McDaniel, 3-0, in the Mayser Center at Franklin & Marshall College.

How it Happened
SET 1
• The Blue Jays jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead to take control early.  Hopkins led 3-2 before a Lauren Anthony kill jump started a 4-0 run that included the final three points off the serve of Morgan Wu.

• Hopkins never let the Green Terror get closer than four points again and led 16-9 after a Simone Bliss kill gave the Blue Jays a 16-9 lead with Wu again coming to the service line.

• Wu helped extend the lead to 21-9 as she served up five consecutive points with a pair of Michelle Abt kills helping fuel the spree.

• McDaniel scored three straight points late in the set to pull within 22-12 before Abt served it out; a kill by Nicole Hada ended it for the Blue Jays.

SET 2
•
After leading from start to finish in set one, the Blue Jays gave up the first point of the second set before a McDaniel service error and back-to-back service aces from Louisa Kishton gave Hopkins a 3-1 lead it would never relinquish.

• The Terror were still within 7-5 after a Blue Jay service error, but Hopkins slowly began to pull away and extended out to a 14-8 lead on an Abt kill that capped a 7-3 run.

•  The lead was down to three at 16-13 as McDaniel took advantage of four Blue Jay attack errors, but a kill from Micaelle Larrieux halted the Green Terror run and the Blue Jays closed the set on an 8-3 run to take it 25-16.  Abt served up three straight points after Larrieux's kill and an attack error by McDaniel sealed the set for the Blue Jays.

SET 3
•
A back-and-forth third set saw 12 ties, including six straight to open set to leave the teams tied at 6-6 after a Blue Jay attacking error.

• McDaniel took its biggest lead of the match at 11-7 as the Terror used a 5-1 run to grab the momentum.   Three straight attacking errors by the Blue Jays fueled the spree, which finally ended on a kill by Louisa Kishton.

• The Blue Jays pulled even at 13 on an Abt kill and six more ties at 15, 16, 18, 19, 21 and 22 followed with the last coming after an Anthony attack error for Johns Hopkins with the Blue Jays up 22-21.

• The Blue Jays made sure there wouldn't be extra points or a fourth set by closing things out with three straight points to complete the sweep.  Back-to-back kills from Abt and a match-ender from Bliss gave the Blue Jays the final set, 25-22.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins earns its third consecutive Centennial Conference title and its sixth since 2011.  Three of the six titles have been won at Franklin & Marshall.

• The Blue Jays earn the Centennial Conference's automatic bid to the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Inside the Box Score
• Hada was named the tournament MVP as she collected 27 assists and 10 digs in the championship match.

• Abt and Bliss tied for the team lead with 10 kills apiece, while Kishton and Eleni Panagopoulos added six apiece.

• Hada (10), Kishton (10), Sarah Khan (10) and Esther Hong (12) all reached double figures in digs as the Blue Jays totaled 52 on the day to help keep the Terror to a .061 hitting percentage.

• McDaniel didn't have anyone get to double-figures in kills as Marlowe Embry's eight paced the Terror, who couldn't overcome 16 attack errors or 11 service errors.
